Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: dj. First Edition. Signed first printing of this beautifully-illustrated retelling of the classic story of a busy goose and the dastardly fox who tries to take advantage of her. Self-taught artist and author Chris Conover's favorite illustration topic is animals, from everyday house cats to fantastic dragons. Her second book earned a Boston Globe - Horn Book Honor, and her vibrant watercolors are a delightful addition to any shelf. 10.5'' x 10.25''. Original plum cloth boards. Original unclipped ($13.95) color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated in color. [32] pages. Signed by Conover to half-title page "with love," with small original drawing of the Sly Fox. Jacket with light wear, tiny price sticker to rear; 1.5" closed tear. Binding with a touch of bumping to corners and spine ends. Tight. Near fine in very good dust jacket. Signed.
Condition: Fine. Signed finished watercolor used in Conover's 1989 book MOTHER GOOSE AND THE SLY FOX. Stunning both in imagery and execution. The piece is an elaborate rendering of the village in the story, with stores, restaurants, and even a herring kiosk for the cats. Across the river we see the "bad" part of town where the foxes live, practicing 3-card Monte. This watercolor appears in the book as a double page spread on pages 8-9. Conover's work is noted for rich colors and incredible attention to detail, some of which is executed using a magnifying glass for accuracy. There is plenty to look at, yet without the overcrowding that hampers many books. A gorgeous piece. 8.5'' x 19'' (image); 11.5'' x 22'' (board). Watercolor on artist board. Signed by Conover. Signed.
