Auerbach (b. 1931} was born in Berlin but has lived most of his life in England. On grounds of style and friendships, he is often grouped with the so-called London School of painters, which includes Lucian Freud, Leon Kossoff and the American expatriate R. B. Kitaj. Although he had been well represented in prestigious private and public collections worldwide, this was Auerbach's first solo show on the West Coast and included half a dozen pictures never exhibited before.
