Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Very uncommon early collection (perhaps unauthorized) of Kipling's work published in 1890 when the author was just 25 years old. Includes frontis portrait of Kipling. Original blue-green printed paper wraps with moderate wear and light soiling; some of the spine cover is missing but the binding is complete as printed; pages dusty with a few pages dog-eared. Very good version of this fragile compilation published by Harper with an interesting early biographical sketch by Lang before the author reached critical fame: "I do not anticipate for Mr. Kipling a very popular popularity.he is not in tune with our modern civilization, whereof many a heart is sick; he is more a home in an Afghan pass than in the Strand."Andrew Lang himself was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. He is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales.
