Christian Franz von Eberstein, sächsischer Abstammung und gebürtig in Eichstätt, liess sich 1747 als Domherr des Hochstifts Basel in Arlesheim nieder, wo das Domkapitel seit 1678 in unmittelbarer Nähe der Stadt Basel seinen Sitz hatte. Ein halbes Jahrhundert lang war er Mitglied in diesem Gremium, ragte bereits nach wenigen Jahren als besonders profilierte Figur heraus und stieg schliesslich bis zum Propst auf. Er war ein traditionsbewusster Protagonist der Reichskirche, verkehrte aber auf freundschaftlicher Basis mit Protestanten und interessierte sich für ihre Theologie: Eberstein ist daher eine Symbolfigur für die Überwindung konfessioneller Konflikte unter gelehrten Persönlichkeiten im Zeitalter der Aufklärung. Als Domherr war er Vertreter eines jahrhundertealten Feudalwesens, pflegte als Privatmann jedoch eine besondere Passion für politische und literarische Publikationen der Aufklärung. Innerhalb des vielseitigen Spektrums seiner Kontakte spielt die Stadt Basel eine wichtige Rolle: So pflegte Eberstein eine enge Freundschaft mit Isaak Iselin, und seine zahlreich erhaltenen Briefe an Iselin sind reichhaltige Quellen für seine literarischen Interessen. Im kulturellen Leben des Hochstifts Basel ragt Eberstein nicht zuletzt in seiner Eigenschaft als Sammler heraus: Der klare Schwerpunkt seines "Kabinetts" war die umfangreiche und wohlgegliederte Bibliothek, die er mit hohen Ambitionen katalogisiert hatte.
