Ab 1623 Fortführung des Verlagshauses de Brys in Frankfurt. Vater von Matthäus Merian dem Jüngeren, Caspar Merian sowie Maria Sibylla Merian. Merian gab eine Reihe von "Topographien" verschiedener Länder heraus; es erschienen 30 Bände mit über 2000 Stadt- und Ortsansichten. Die nach der Natur aufgenommenen Ansichten sind in der Perspektive meisterhaft und stellen oftmals die ältesten dokumentierten Ansichten der jeweiligen Orte dar.
