Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First paperback edition of Kosinski's first book (other than two works in Polish), and the first of two under the Novak pseudonym. Very good, solid copy, spine not cracked or creased. Inscribed by Kosinski on the first page. He first signed his name as Joseph Novak, drew beneath it what looks like a caricature of a bird (an allusion to The Painted Bird, perhaps), and then wrote the following over the rest of the page: "For Americe (?), with warmest regards, sincerely, Jerzy Kosinski Fall of 1987." This paperback edition is uncommon. Kosinski's reputation as a writer and his personal reputation as well came under a cloud in the years before his suicide in 1991. It is interesting that, in maligning him, his critics did not address the composition of the two Novak books, which only he, based as they were on his own experiences, could have written, and which are extremely effective pieces of writing. Introduction by Irving R. Levine. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Kozinski inscribed this book "To Bill [Bill Berg, his literary agent] - with sincere gratitude - J. New York, March 1960." The inscription is prefaced by the following quote from Dostoevsky in Kosinski's distinctive handwriting: ". God took seeds from different worlds and sowed them on this earth, and his garden grew up and everything came up that would come up only through the feeling of the contact with other mysterious worlds. If that feeling grows weak or is destroyed in you, the heavenly growth will die in you . Then you will be indifferent to life and will even grow to hate it." Red lettering on grey covers in a grey pictorial dust jacket. 8vo, 286pp. This was te author's first book. The dust jacket spine ends are lightly chipped and there is a triangular 1/4" x 3/8" piece missing on the top front edge. A letter provided to me by the person who bought the book at a Stamford, CT auction gallery is included, as provenance, with the book. Inscribed by Author(s).

The first British edition of the author's first book, a pseudonymously published nonfiction account of Russia in the postwar years, predating his first novel, The Painted Bird, by five years. Inscribed by the author as "Jerzy Kosinski" for Hugh Moorhead in 1982. Moorhead was a Philosophy professor at Northeastern Illinois University who wrote to 250 authors to ask them what they thought the meaning of life was, and then published their answers in a depressing book that suggested nobody had much of a clue. Stripe at bottom page edges; very good in a very good dust jacket chipped at the upper front spine fold. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings.
