hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Acceptable. 1970 signed and inscribed first edition, association copy (1977 Nobel winner Roger Guillemin), Christopher Publishing (North Quincy, Massachusetts), 6 3/8 x 9 1/2 inches tall embossed blue cloth hardcover in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, gilt lettering to front cover and spine, 200 pp. Laid in is a card reading, 'From the Private Collection of Dr. Roger and Lucienne Guillemin, Nobel Laureate, 1977, Salk Institute, La Jolla, CA.' Roger Charles Louis Guillemin was a French-American neuroscientist who received the National Medal of Science in 1976, and the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1977 for his work on neurohormones. On the blank front free-endpaper, nicely signed by the author and inscribed to Guillemin and his wife Lucienne. Very slight edgewear to covers. Mild foxing (from a half-century of La Jolla sea air) to blank front and rear endpapers and pastedowns. Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a slightly soiled and foxed dust jacket which has quite a bit of edge-chipping but which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~SP42~ [2.0P] The basic premise of this book is that humans evolved from lower primates. The largest change has been our increased intelligence. This is what allowed us to become the dominant species on earth, and the only species which might be able to save the earth from outside destruction, such as asteroids. The author, Robert Klark Graham (1906-1997) was an American eugenicist and businessman who made millions by developing shatterproof plastic eyeglass lenses and who later founded the Repository for Germinal Choice, a sperm bank for geniuses, in the hope of implementing a eugenics program. Graham created his controversial 'Nobel sperm bank' in 1980. Initially, his intent was to obtain sperm only from Nobel laureates, but the scarcity of donors and the low viability of their sperm (because of age) forced Graham to develop a looser set of criteria. By 1983, Graham's sperm bank was reputed to have 19 genius repeat donors, including William Bradford Shockley (recipient of the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics and proponent of eugenics) and two anonymous Nobel Prize in Science winners. The bank closed in 1999, two years after the death of its founder. A total of 218 children had been born under its auspices. Given all this, it would appear that the book's prior owner, a Nobel Laureate, was likely one of those solicited for participation in Graham's 'Nobel sperm bank.'.
