The Schmidt Heins twins (b. 1949) are two of the most active and prolific book artists in Germany, engaging with newspapers, magazines, photographs, coffee beans, paint, etc. Guy Schraenen (1941-2018), curator at the Neues Museum Weserburg, conceived this exhibition as a retrospective of their bookworks from 1972-82. This catalogue was jointly designed by the twins. Schraenen contributes an essay entitled "Einzahl Mehrzal." With useful lists of exhibitions and books on the penultimate page. Fine copy. The book is simple in its design, consisting of text only and arranged with clarity. Hermann Kern's introduction gives a 'Clue to the works' of Barbara and Gabriele Schmidt-Heins. There is then a 'General section of the book descriptions' and separate sections for Barbara and Gabriele's bookworks (Barbara's lists 32, Gabriele 30), each also comprising pages for 'Work techniques' and 'Instrument, material.' 50 copies were also printed as a special edition, each with 50 inserts, 'half of them worked on by each of the artists. 13 double-page illus. 5 pp. of text. 4to (280 x 215 mm.), orig. plain stiff boards, spine taped as issued. San Francisco: Steven Leiber, [2010]. Steven Leiber's rare last catalogue, devoted to the artists' books of the Schmidt-Heins sororal twins, with color reproductions of their work. It is modeled after the exhibition catalogue Buchwerke, Barbara Schmidt-Heins, Gabriele Schmidt-Heins, Original-Bucher 1972 bis 1976, issued by the Kunstraum München & the Institut für moderne Kunst, Nuremberg, in 1976. This catalogue offers 14 unique bookworks for sale (seven by each twin), and provides detailed descriptions of their structures and illustrations. Born in Rellingen, the twins (b. 1949) both studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Hamburg. Their bookworks garnered praise through exhibitions in 1976 at the Kabinett für aktuelle Kunst and documenta 6 the year after. In fine condition. â § Steven Leiber Catalogs (2019), pp. 215-17.
8vo (212 x 151 mm.), orig. semi-stiff boards (stained), orig. gray tape over spine. N.p.: "Okt. 1977." One of the Schmidt-Heins twins' archetypal bookworks, in a characteristically modest binding holding 50 folding leaves with an identical motif applied. In this case, on the lower inner corners of the rectos, a diagonal line has been drawn with a thick purple pencil; the versos bear cut-out brown triangles that are precisely placed to mirror the recto lines. The glue employed, likely casein-based, has seeped through the leaves and covers. "The decision to break away from the individual exclusive sheet, instead: summation as principle. 100 sheets bound into a book also conceived as volume and weight. The resultant change of attitude determines how and with what the sheets are to be processed: search for methods, laying the framework of action. In each case the 100 sheets are to be subjected to the same process. The claim of the single sheet is relativized by hundredfold repetition. Result: conversion of quantity into a new quality. With the principle of repetition, individual aspects of the form and content which would otherwise remain outside the field of observation and investigative interest are stressed and emphasized." Near fine. Dated on the inside of the lower cover: "Okt. '77." â § For other examples of the twins' bookworks from this period see Barbara Schmidt-Heins & Gabriele Schmidt-Heins, eds., Buchwerke: Original-Bücher 1972 bis 1976 (Kunstraum München: 1976).
