Using a modernized Pygmalion theme, this novel, with great cultural and regional depictions of rural Maryland, features a man who marries an obese woman with the intent of feeding her to death for her money, except she falls in love with a young man who helps her loose weight and she transforms into a beauty. Cain had written a murder mystery ending with the husband succeeding, but the publishers asked for this different happy ending, making the novel more of a romance. A presentable, tight, vintage collectible. Faint foxing to the cover borders, else square, tight and very good in gray linen with plum titles and Dwiggins binding art designs to the front cover and to the spine, deckle page fore-edges; lacking a dust jacket.
