Small 4to. 220 x 180 mm. pp. xi + 122. All edges uncut. Limited edition of one hundred ordinary and thirty large paper copies, of which twenty four were for sale. This copy is no. 2, of the large paper edition, printed on hand- made paper and numbered and signed by Herbert J. Reid. Stiff paper boards with a wrap-around limp prin…ted cover. "Giovanni della Casa was born near Florence in 1503. He studied in Florence, Bologna and Rome. In Padua he befriended Bembo in 1527 and in 1529 he returned to Rome. His ecclesiastical career started in 1537 and he was ambassador in Venice from 1544 to 1549. He wrote two famous orations: one to convince Venetians to ally against Carlo V, and the other to induce the emperor to hand Piacenza back to the pontiff state. During the papal rule of Giulio III, he went to live in the Trevigiano area (1553-55). Following the election of Paolo IV, he returned to Rome where he was secretary of state. He died in Rome in 1556. He wrote "Galateo", at the request of Galeazzo Florimonte, from whose name the title was taken. The author aimed at writing a handbook, based on a moral order, to provide standards for social behaviour in everyday living." Paper cover slightly dust- marked, contents mint.
