Rafael Sabatini turns to a momentous episode in French history- the inflation and financial panic that followed the death of Louis XIV and a fabulous character, John Law. A financial wizard and exiled Scot, John Law had all the instincts of a gambler and the gall of an upstart. In a series of daring moves, he won control of the finances of France when the country was virtually bankrupt. With the founding of the famous Banque Generale,'' Law's es, he won control of the finances of France when the country was virtually bankrupt. With the founding of the famous Banque Generale,'' Law's radical banking theories brought riches to the French people. He was worshiped as a savior. His belief that wealth may be found outside of gold itself- in the hearts of productive and inventive people, in paper currency and credit- was successful for the time, and the fortunes of the gambler soared. Law played for high stakes when the venomous Count of Horn, the overbearing and ascetic de Noailles, President of the Council, sought to block Law's march to power. In a sinister plot joined by members of Parliament, they aimed to destroy the man who had such a hold on France. About the author (from the dust jacket) Mr. Sabatini brings into sharp focus all the rivalry and jealousy of the French Court, besides its scandals: infidelities, murders, and intrigues. This is the setting and the real meaning behind John Law's greatest gambles.

Disbound. Condition: Very Good. First. Edward Moore(1712 1757), English dramatist and miscellaneous writer, the son of a dissenting minister, was born at Abingdon, Berkshire. He was the author of Fables for the Female Sex (1744), The Trial of Selim the Persian (1748), The Foundling (1748) and Gil Blas (1751). He wrote the domestic tragedy of The Gamester, originally produced in 1753 with David Garrick in the leading character of Beverley the gambler. It is upon The Gamester that Moore's literary reputation rests; the play was much-produced in England and the United States in the century after Moore's death. The oft-quoted phrase "rich beyond the dreams of avarice" is spoken by Mrs. Beverley in the play's second act. This copy is very good, disbound but in protective plain paper wrappers. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In-octavo bound in full contemporary glazed calfskin, richly decorated spine, garnet shagreen title and volume numbers. Very elegant binding. - - - - Elizabeth Inchbald, born October 15, 1753 in Stanningfield and died August 1, 1821 in Kensington, was an English novelist, playwright, and actress. She made her stage debut in Bristol (1772) in the role of Cordelia, while her husband played King Lear. During a stay in France, where Joseph Inchbald tries in vain to live from his painting, she has the idea of writing comedies. After the death of her husband in 1779, Inchbald succeeded in being hired at the theater of Covent Garden, and continued to play, sometimes in London, sometimes on tour, without ever having a great success but, at the same time, she gave plays theatre. If Inchbald's success as an actress is ordinary, as a writer she is more successful. The Covent-Garden plays, in 1786, its little comedy of the Conte Mogol (The Mogul Tale). From that time until 1805, she gave eighteen other plays, which were almost all well received by the public and most often adapted from the French Inchbald also gave a few novels, the most famous of which, entitled Simple histoire, (The Simple story , 1791) was a brilliant success. Despite the title, the action of the novel is not simple: several of the characters, like Lord and Lady Elmwood, belong to the aristocratic world. The interest is sustained, the scenes follow each other well and certain characters, Miss Milner, Sandford, Lord Elmwood, are excellent. Simple histoire was immediately translated into French by Deschamps (1791) and Scribe drew a comedy-vaudeville from it for the Théâtre de Madame (May 26, 1826).
