Tiny, faint smudge to front, else fine, in russet cloth with printed spine label over illustrated boards; housed in a sturdy, illustrated paper-over-boards slipcase, which shows the residue from the removal of a spine label, but that is otherwise fine. Both sets of verse fables penned by the 18th century British poet and dramatist, beautifully printed in black with red titles, and accompanied by 66 wood-engravings done by Gillian Lewis Tyler, printed in black or red. 234 pages, plus colophon. Superb.

Hardcover. 12mo. Condition: Very good. 1st. 238ppg. Bound in white vellum, binding is square and hinges are very tight. Deckle edge text block is only minimally tanned with rose gold gilt over head edge rubbed at the fore edge. Title and detailing is written in red and black over the cover and spine are still bright and untouched. Boards are slightly tanned around the edges with a small 1/4in notch out of the fore edge and one of the same size from the spine edge of the back cover.

He added fifteen in a second part in 1738.Illustrated with a frontispiece. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards and new marbled endpapers as well as new blank pages. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a slight rubbing to the front and rear joint. Inscribed by a previous owner to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Cross (signed with an ink pallet at foot of verso of front free endleaf) in half calf, marbled paper sides, the spine divided into six panels with gilt tooled raised bands, lettered in the second and third on maroon goatskin labels, the others with a crowned floral tool and sprigs, marbled endleaves and edges. (Slightly rubbed, with a tiny patch of insect activity at head of rear cover). A very good copy in a very well preserved and neatly executed binding, signed "C. Cross Binder To The Queen". Another binding with the same signature, on a copy of Broderip's Leaves from the Notebook of a Naturalist, 1852, was item 434 in my catalogue of Particular Bindings [from the collection of John Collins] and is now in the British Library. Spawn and Kinsella, Ticketed Bookbindings from Nineteenth-Century Britain, 426, list a binder's stamp "Cross, Binders To the King", on a book dated 1892 from the E. P. Wormersley collection. This must have been bound after Edward VII became King in 1901. There are 117 books signed by Cross in the Royal Collections, most of them at Sandringham, the last dated c.1910. There is no entry for a C. Cross in Maurice Packer's Bookbinders of Victorian London.

Over 150 fables in both prose and verse and charming vignette woodcuts throughout. Geometric patterned pale blue endpapers, all original. A dedicatory page facing title to "The Guardians of Youth". Some light wear at extremes and spine a little lighter and with some rubbing to surface, but all intact and still very good, several of the woodcuts have been coloured or partly coloured in up to about page 40, not too detracting, but noticeable (watercolour used would remove). Small octavo. 1832. *Only 2 copies located on Copac and the dedicatory page is listed as printed in purple as this is. The printed glossy finish paper covers on this makes this a rare find.
