First Everyman's Library edition of this âfascinating tour de force and a moving tribute to an extraordinary manâ (Margaret Atwood, New York Times Book Review). Octavo, original cloth, pictorial endpapers, ribbon bound in. Boldly signed by Gabriel Garcia Marquez on the half-title page. Translated and introduced by Edith Grossman. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket photograph by Arici Graziano. Jacket design by Barbara de Wilde and Abby Weintraub. Simon BolÃvar, known in six Latin American countries as the Liberator, is one of the most revered heroes of the western hemisphere; in GarcÃa Márquezâs brilliant reimagining he is magnificently flawed as well. The novel follows BolÃvar as he takes his final journey in 1830 down the Magdalena River toward the sea, revisiting the scenes of his former glory and lamenting his lost dream of an alliance of American nations. Forced from power, dogged by assassins, and prematurely aged and wasted by a fatal illness, the General is still a remarkably vital and mercurial man. He seems to remain alive by the sheer force of will that led him to so many victories in the battlefields and love affairs of his past. As he wanders in the labyrinth of his failing powersâ"and still-powerful memoriesâ"he defies his impending death until the last. âPassage after passage shines with the brilliance of GarcÃa Márquezâ¦He has invented some of the magic characters of our age. His General, however, is not only magic, but real" (The Wall Street Journal).

First printing. Signed limited first US edition of the Nobel Prize-winning Colombian novelist's fictionalized account of Simón Bolivar's last months. "Had Bolivar not existed," Atwood writes, "Mr. Garcia Marquez would have had to invent him." In some respects, he did: the events of Bolívar's final days are unrecorded in official histories, and the author's recreation of that time incorporates both critique and invention, resulting in what is less a traditional historical novel than what Alvarez Borland calls a historiographic metafiction. "Seldom has there been a more fitting match between author and subject. Mr. Garcia Marquez wades into his flamboyant, often improbable and ultimately tragic material with enormous gusto, heaping detail upon sensuous detail, alternating grace with horror, perfume with the stench of corruption, the elegant language of public ceremony with the vulgarity of private moments, the rationalistic clarity of Bolivar's thought with the malarial intensity of his emotions, but tracing always the main compulsion that drives his protagonist: the longing for an independent and unified South America" (Atwood). A beautiful copy of this ambitious portrait of the Liberator of South America. 8'' x 5.25''. Original full brown morocco with gilt-lettered spine. Top and bottom edges tinted pale green. Pale green marbled endpapers. In original pictorial slipcase. Map by George Colbert. [xiv], 286, [4] pages. Edition of 350 numbered copies printed on special paper and specially bound, signed by Marquez on limitation page. This copy no. 213. Slight shelfwear to slipcase. Else bright, sharp, and tight overall. Fine in a near fine or better slipcase. Signed.

Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First American Edition. A fantastic collection of sixteen first editions, all signed by Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez and all inscribed by him to the same recipient, Richard Mattie. A painstaking exercise in book collecting, undertaken by the resourceful Mattie over a period spanning from 1997 to 2005 with the assistance of a number of contacts in Mexico who had a close connection to the author by which the signatures were obtained. The collection is accompanied by a 1-inch thick folder, titled by Mattie "The Gabriel Garcia Marquez File 1997-2005", in which he has meticulously documented this nearly decade-long collecting venture, preserving every letter, fax, postal receipt, wire and emails (printed out in full). A remarkable collection. All sixteen books are first American editions, with the exception of Vivir para cotarla which is the true first edition in Spanish, the Columbian edition published by Grupo Editorial Norma, Bogota, 2002. Most books are Fine in Fine unclipped dust jackets, with several exceptions: Strange Pilgrims has slight cloth discoloration at the base of the book; No One Writes to the Colonel has a partial name erasure top of the front free endpaper and some top edge foxing, else Near Fine in a bright first issue DJ with a minuscule closed tear bottom of front panel and a small scratch to the front spine joint else fine; One Hundred Years of Solitude is Very Good with light wear to extremities, soiling to cloth, a contemporary former owner inscription written in Spanish and dated 1970 at the top of the half-title page, in a Very Good first issue dust jacket with the exclamation mark at the end of "Latin America" on the front flap, with some old tape-reside to the blindside, shallow edge wear and rubbing; the dust jacket of Evil Hour is price-clipped; faint staining to rear cloth of Love in the Time of Cholera though still Near fine. The Limited Editions Club (LEC) of One Hundred Years of Solitude is inscribed in English, "To Richard, from his Friend," and is signed and dated 1998; notable as Garcia Marquez rarely inscribed in English. Additionally, Mattie reportedly said that Garcia Marquez commented that this was the first time he signed this book. Fine in a Near Fine slipcase, with glassine wrapper toned, wrinkled, edge worn, with several pieces of tape and three small circular labels at one spine end.
