Handbill. 12mo. Near fine. A superb, bright General Order briefly noting that "Major General E.A. Hitchcock. is detailed as Commissioner for the Exchange of Prisoners of War" -- a position he held until the war's end. Signed at the conclusion in type by Assistant Adjutant General E.D. Townsend. Accompanied by a Civil War-era 6" X 9" heavy stock steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of Hitchcock in uniform. Very good. Mild age toning and bit of faint foxing.
Condition: Very Good. Small broadsheet. (13 x 19 cm.). Dated June 24, 1863. Court Martial of First Lieutenant Thomas C. Baldwin, 7th Iowa Volunteers for two counts of drunkenness and a third count of "taking "a negro wench into his tent, took her in bed with him, and lay with her until nearly midnight with his tent doors open." Baldwin plead guilty to all three counts and was sentenced to be dismissed from the service. The proceedings were then forwarded to President Lincoln for review. The record was found defective in not showing that the court was properly organized but, since Baldwin admitted his guilt of "a most gross and debasing offence," the President directed that Baldwin be dismissed from the service.
