Aus dem Klappentext: Singers Buch gehört zu der Richtung angelsächsischer Ethik, die, im Anschluß an Kant, den Gesichtspunkt vernünftiger Begründung in der Ethik geltend macht und sich damit gegen alle Varianten des moralischen Skeptizismus wendet, die in der Behauptung übereinstimmen, daß es so etwas wie einen guten Grund für ein moralisches Urteil und stichhaltige moralische Argumente für Handlungsnormen nicht gibt. In diesem Zusammenhang untersucht Singer fundamentale Prinzipien moralischen Argumentierens und die Bedingungen, unter denen sie anwendbar und gültig sind. Sein spezifischer Ansatz geht aus vom Prinzip der Folgen (in seiner verallgemeinerten Form): "Wenn die Folgen davon, daß jeder x täte, nicht wünschenswert wären, dann sollte nicht jeder x tun." In Verbindung mit dem Prinzip der Verallgemeinerung, das in der Tradition auch als das Prinzip der Gerechtigkeit, Fairneß oder Unparteilichkeit bekannt ist: "Was für einen richtig ist, muß unter ähnlichen Umständen auch für jeden anderen richtig sein" bildet es die Grundlage eines Arguments, das nach Singers Auffassung - zumindest implizit - das zentrale Argument eines jeden moralischen Disputs ist, in dem es darum geht, Handlungen und Normen zu rechtfertigen.
