In 1917, he enlisted with the 244th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After several months in a reserve battalion in England, Harrison transferred to the Royal Montreal Regiment and was sent to the Western Front. On August 8th, 1918 Harrison participated in the first day of the Battle of Amiens, during which he was wounded in the foot; he spent the rest of the war recuperating.** Harrison's novel, originally serialized in 1928, was published in novel form in 1930. First published in June 1930, the novel was reprinted several times in rapid succession. This copy is from the Fourth Printing in September 1930. While criticized for its anti-war stance and uncomfortably frank descriptions of warfare, it enjoyed commercial success.** Fourth printing, September 1930.
