Shelf cocked and front endpaper with small thinned area from name erasure; in a bright gilt-lettered binding. Overall, a very good copy. First American edition. "A late and surprisingly romantic novel for Gissing, written at a period when his second marriage was falling apart. As a political sub-plot the novel. the novel explores British imperialism in the period of the Boer War from the author's increasingly pacifistic standpoint." (John Sutherland).
