Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. The dustjacket has a short tear and some edgewear. This first edition was limited to 5000 copies. Glamour, anyone? In this new collection, 30 images from the limited-edition portfolios of renowned Hollywood photographer Hurrell portray a "fabulous bestiary" of movie stars of the Thirties and Forties--Crawford, Gable, Garbo, and Dietrich, for a start. Hurrell's strongly composed portraits gave a distinctive look to many a star and thereafter affected many a career. Though mere commercial work in their day, his photographs, whose hallmarks are intimacy and atmosphere, have come to be considered art. Taken in the depth of the Great Depression, these newly available images of instantly recognizable faces may well have helped Americans through a trying time in their history by providing an escape from their travails as well as the inspiration that life can be swell if you just keep it up. As such, Hurrell's faces have been called "the gods and goddesses of modern democracy." Born on June 1, 1904 in Covington, KY, he grew up in Cincinnati, OH, developing an interest in painting and photography as a child. Hurrell went on to study at the Art Institute of Chicago, and initially used photography as a way to document his paintings. While living at a painting colony in California during the mid-1920s, photography had started to become his preferred medium. After having made some seductive photos for the actress Norma Shearer, Hurrell was hired on as the head of MGM studios photography department. While working at MGM, he was put in charge taking headshots of the Hollywood stars for each new film. Hurrell served in World War II, and afterward lived in New York as a fashion photographer. Though he returned to Hollywood in the mid-1950s, he found his portraits no longer appealed to studios, though he continued to work as a still photographer on film sets. The artist died on May 17, 1992 in Los Angeles, CA. Today, his works are held in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., among others.".

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. George Hurrell was called the "Rembrandt of Hollywood." Before his arrival, movie star portraits were "soft focus" and undistinguished, derivative of the Main Street USA portrait salon. Hurrell instituted a sharp, dramatic look. The vibrant, temperamental artist was an original, loved by the subjects he glamorized. For these performers, a Hurrell portrait was the passport to immortality. In this paperback edition of photographer and historian Mark A. Vieira's original volume, the author offers a wealth of new images to illustrate a compelling narrative. Featuring rare and never-before-published portraits and behind-the-scenes shots, George Hurrell's Hollywood covers Hurrell's entire career, from his beginnings as a Los Angeles society photographer to his finale as the celebrity photographer who became a celebrity himself. More than 400 pristine images showcase his work with Hollywood icons from 1929 to 1992. Vieira's text recounts the artist's life, from his childhood to the heyday of his career as a star maker, through untold stories of his fall from grace and eventual comeback. Filled with previously unseen photos of the biggest stars across more than six decades and abounding with fresh insight, this volume is not only the ultimate showcase of the trailblazing artist's work but an indispensable treasury of Hollywood lore. The definitive biography and photographic record of George Hurrell, the famed photographer who shot the most iconic images of classic Hollywood legends-now featuring new and upgraded images. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
