Cullum [1921-2003] was an American elementary school teacher and progressive educationalist, who believed that play was an important element of pedagogy for young minds. A number of artists each illustrate a poem in the voice of a distinct child addressing a teacher. The book was a huge success at the time selling over half a million copies and this visionary teacher's work was examined in a documentary by the film maker, Robert Downey Senior.
