This enthralling novel follows Gerard, a young man of great talent but consumed by despair, whose existence has been dominated by a tumultuous love affair with an unattainable woman. As his financial woes mount and the realization of his aspirations eludes him, Gerard resolves that life is no longer worth living and contemplates ending it all. Yet, on his last night in London, he crosses paths with Justin Jermyn, an enigmatic young man known as the Fate-Reader, who claims to possess extraordinary abilities. Intrigued and skeptical, Gerard agrees to accompany Jermyn to his peculiar abode. As they sip champagne and engage in late-night conversation, Jermyn reveals that he knows of Gerard's plan to end his life. He urges Gerard to reconsider, arguing that fate may have a different path in store for him. This encounter challenges Gerard's despair, leading him to question his decision and contemplate the possibility of a future beyond his current suffering.
