Quarto (26.5cm); carbon typescript (rectos only), double hole-punched and ribbon-tied into drab greyish-green wrappers; [iv],[1]-72,[1]pp. Wrappers worn, with numerous tears, shallow losses, and attendant creases to extremities, and some ink staining to upper front cover that's bled through slightly onto two preliminary leaves; circular embossed stamp of Mrs. Marshall's Typewriting Office to lower rear blank. This copy bears extensive holograph corrections and deletions in pencil throughout the text, with substantial portions of additional dialogue written in; the hand does not resemble Chase's, though their substantive nature in relation to the storyline suggests they are likely Macrae's; complete, and Very Good.Draft typescript for a wartime gangster musical, adapted by Chase from his story for the stage, with additional dialogue by Arthur Macrae (1908-1962). The story is set in the Orchid Room, a popular Manhattan club owned by a gangster named Rabener, who is using it as a front to run his dope racket. A rival outfit attempts to shakedown Rabener and his goons, threatening to shoot up the place that evening if they don't hand over "protection" money. Rabener has the clever idea to incorporate a "mock shooting" into the evening's musical number, and he and his goons kill the rival gang leader in front of a crowd as the police commissioner looks on and laughs. Enter Rabener's secretary Fanquist, whose lover was murdered by Rabener, and who shoots him on stage. She flees, and together with a clum employee concocts a plan to frame one of Rabener's henchmen for the murder. The stage production ran for a year at the London Hippodrome (November, 1941-October, 1942) before transferring to the Prince of Wales Theatre for another couple of months. The story was not collected in print until its inclusion in a collection of short fiction in the late 1980s. An interesting, early work by the hard-boiled master, produced just two years after No Orchids for Miss Blandish; not separately listed in OCLC.…
