Hardcover. Condition: New. Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (18901988), affectionately known as Bacha Khan, Badshah Khan and Fakr-e-Afghan among his people, and 'Frontier Gandhi' in India, was born in Uthmanzai in the North-West Frontier Province of British India. His life was dedicated to the social reform of the Pukhtuns and he continu…es to be revered across the world by them. In India, he is known for his close association with Mahatma Gandhi and his leadership of the Khudai Khidmatgar (Servants of God) movement from 193047 the most successful and sustained Gandhian non-violent campaign anywhere in the world. The Khudai Khidmatgars or 'Red Shirts' were key allies of the Congress who formed three governments in the NWFP despite brutal opposition from the colonial regime. Badshah Khan's success in creating a disciplined non-violent movement in a Muslim and Pukhtun context that emphasized justice, courage, respect for women and pluralism, continues to inspire today. This is the first time that his autobiography is available in English. His candid style brings to life events and personalities of the independence movement as he records the untiring energy and sacrifices that went into winning freedom. The original Pashto edition was first published in 1983 in Afghanistan when he was 93 years old. (An earlier account of his life, also titled My Life and Struggle was published in 1969 but this was based on interviews conducted with him and not his written autobiography.) This translation was done by Imtiaz Ahmad Sahibzada at the request of Shandana Humayun Khan. Shandana's maternal great-grandfather was Qazi Ataullah, a close lieutenant of Bacha Khan's and a key figure in the Khudai Khidmatgar movement.

Mohammad Yunus Khan (1916-2001) "was a member of Indian Foreign Service. He served as ambassador to Turkey, Indonesia, Iraq, and Spain. He promoted trade between India and the rest of the world through regular trade fairs and the establishment of exhibition complex at Pragati Maidan in Delhi. He also headed the erstwhile Trade Fair Authority of India which is now rebranded as India Trade Promotion Organization. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan" (Wikipedia). Frontier Speaks is Yunus's first book and contains a foreword by Nehru. It concerns the history and peoples of the North-West Frontier, with a section entitled "Abdul Ghaffar Khan and his Movement." Khan was the founder of the Khudai Khidmatgar resistance movement against British colonial rule in India, and for this reason the book was banned by the British government in 1942.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Khan is a surname and title of Asian origin. It can have one of several connotations, all related in some cap…acity to the title of Khan, which originated in Turkic and Central Asian traditions and was thereafter historically granted to Muslim rulers. Infiltration of the name from central Asia happened with the coming of Pashtuns into the sub-continent who used this name as a tile as well as a suffix to indicate their ethnic identity. The later Turks and Mughal invaders also brought the name with them. Later Muslim Rajput rulers won the title Khan as a suffix upon accepting Islam. Baloch tribes in Balochistan and in Sindh; Northern Iranian Turkic tribes; Subcontinental musicians; Sudhans of Kashmir; Krrals, Dhunds and miscellaneous tribes in northern Asia have all taken on this name without any historical or other justification. It is though generally used as a shorthand name for Pashtuns and Pathans throughout the South Asian subcontinent.
