Contact seller4-star seller40 x 42 1/2 inches. There are two maps on this cartographic production. The Empire Group, NY,NJ and PA, is the primary focus. Done in 1915, the map capture the spirit of the economies of the states on a combined basis. Through the use of color coding the viewer is able to differentiate between many features. for instance steam r…ailroads are printed in black while electric railways are printed in red. It is a gripping image that is printed in bold colors. The verso map is the world with an index of places and latest populations. Shown are railways in operation and proposed. Cables and steamship lines are also shown along with principal coaling stations. Two maps of importance for this pre-WWI time period. This map seems to be later than other editions in OCLC. Very good with minor separations a fold intersections.

Arrowsmith's fine twin-hemisphere map detailing Cook's voyages Engraved map, with fine original hand-colour in outline, on four sheets, joined in two parts, dissected and mounted on linen, some off-setting, housed in original green marbled paper slipcase, rubbed and scuffed, with bookseller's label pasted to upper cover. Arrowsm…ith's iconic world map on a twin-hemisphere, or globular, projection, charting the routes of Captain Cook's three voyages. First published in 1794, the map is on the same scale (five equatorial degrees to one inch) as Arrowsmith's 1790 'Chart of the World on Mercator's Projection'. The two maps were intended, as he states, to complement one another, exhibiting "the contrast between the two best projections upon which general maps of the world can be constructed". The map is typical of Arrowsmith's work. With myth, misconception, and guesswork stripped away, the style is sparse and elegant, prioritizing cutting-edge geographical detail over decorative flourish. All three voyages made by Captain Cook are plotted (1768-1771, 1772-1775, and 1776-1779). Visible, too, are the routes of other explorers, including that taken in 1773 by Captain Constantine John Phipps, later Baron Mulgrave, towards the North Pole. The present example appears without the title and dedication, which, as these were printed on separate sheets, is not unusual for this map. The following features can, however, date it to 1808: the appearance of "Bass's Strait", separating Australia from Tasmania; the increased detail on the "Stony Mountains" (that is, the Rockies); the removal of "Doegg Nation" and the lake that sits to its right from western North America; and the lack of detail in the southern coastline of Australia. Aaron Arrowsmith (1750-1823) was the finest cartographer of his generation. Although he received little formal education, it is believed that he was taught some mathematical instruction by William Emerson, an author of several books on the application of mathematics to the area of cartography. Around 1770, Arrowsmith moved to London to seek employment. He seems to have worked for William Faden before joining John Cary Sr. in the early 1780s. There, he provided the measurements for John Cary's early publication detailing the roads from London to Falmouth, his first signed work. Arrowsmith set up on his own in 1790 and over the next 30 years produced some of the most beautiful and elegant maps of the era. The label pasted to the upper cover of the slipcase names the bookseller as "Wm. Allen (32) Dame Strt". This is likely to be William Allen, the leading Dublin printseller of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, who traded from 32 Dame Street from 1786, until his death in 1825.

Contact seller5-star sellerThis map of the World was issued as part of Samuel Augustus Mitchell's "New Universal Atlas" in 1846. This was the very first year of publication of this atlas. The atlas was comprised of finely engraved and delicately colored maps and plans of all areas of the world. A resurgence of atlas production in North America during the…1840's and 1850's reflected an emerging mass market fueled by prosperity and mobility. Mitchell was in the right place at the right time. A native of Scotland, Mitchell became a prolific publisher of geographical works when he emigrated to the United States. Walter Ristow, famous map historian, notes that Mitchell employed as many as 250 persons in his Philadelphia establishment, which he took over from Henry S. Tanner in the mid-nineteenth century. We hope you enjoy this very rare Mitchell map! This map measures 14 inches by 9.25 inches.

Contact seller5-star sellerWe are privileged to offer this map of the World on the Globular Projection, issued as part of S. Augustus Mitchells New Universal Atlas of 1851. Mitchell, one of America's premier mapmakers, published this atlas from 1846-1849. In 1850, Thomas, Cowperthwait and Co. purchased the copyright for this atlas. He enlarged the atlas t…o include more maps and also added the new features of a chromolithographed title page and contents page. The lithographed maps issued by Cowperthwait and Co. are what we consider the finest maps produced in this era of mapmaking. One of the reasons that these maps by Cowperthwait are exceptionally difficult to find is because of their short period of publication from 1850-1854. The copyrights on some of these maps show Mitchell or Cowperthwait's name. This map measures 14.5 inches by 9.5 inches.
