Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Reissue. Includes publisher's slipcase. Sandglass insert number 7L laid in. Spine toned, slipcase edges rubbed. 1947 Hard Cover. xiii, [3], 427 pp. Color illustrations by Edard A. Wilson. "Westward Ho! is an 1855 British historical novel by Charles Kingsley, inspired… in part by the Crimean War. Beginning in the fictional seaport of 'Bideford Quay' near the real Bideford in North Devon during the reign of Elizabeth I, Westward Ho! follows the adventures of Amyas Leigh, an unruly child who as a young man follows Francis Drake to sea. Amyas loves local beauty Rose Salterne, as does nearly everyone else. Much of the novel involves the kidnap of Rose by a Spaniard. Amyas spends time in the Caribbean seeking gold, and eventually returns to England at the time of the Spanish Armada, finding his true love in the process; yet fate had blundered and brought misfortune into Amyas's life, for Amyas loses his brother Frank Leigh and Rose Salterne, which two were caught by the Spaniards and were burnt alive. The book is the inspiration behind the unusual name of the village of Westward Ho! in Devon, the only place name in England which contains an exclamation mark. The phrase was also adopted to describe both the westward migration to the United States and across its western frontier.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York. 1947. Hardcover. Edition/Printing not stated. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Good; light shelfwear to head, tail, and tips; suntoned spine; bump indentation on the rear board. No DJ. Blue cloth boards and spine with bright gilt letter…ing on the spine; Scribner logo on the front board in gilt. Clean internals; internal hinges are sound and not split. 411 pp 8vo. This work has all the fascination of a romance, yet it is both biographical and historical. The events occur in the time of Queen Elizabeth and with the adventures of the hero of the story are interwoven the lives of many heroic men, to whom the author believes that England owes much of her naval and commercial glory. To give these persons their just due seems t be the design of the writer. The book is ably written in commemoration of these men of Devon- "Drakes and Hawkins, Gilberts and Raleighs, Grenvilles and Oxenhams, their voyages and battles, their heroic lives and heroic deaths." The self-sacrifice and heroism, the faith and valor depicted n these pages with the romance connected with it, invest the story with more than ordinary interest, for we consider it a work of uncommon vigor and power. A clean very presentable copy. 10 color plates. N.C. Wyeth (illustrator).
