Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Revised Edition. SIGNED & INSCRIBED by the editor, C.A. Buchheim to ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE in London on 17 April, 1899. This being Swinburne's own copy of Goethe. The inscription appears on the verso of ffep, in black ink, in German. Inscription reads (in full): "Dem dichter Algernon Charles Swinburne in aufrirlitizer verehrung gewidmet, von editor - London 17 April 1899". Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909), Victorian poet, England's premier poet of the day, was certainly influenced by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). Contemporary literary publication Vassar Miscellany (Volume XXXVIII, Number 1, 1 October 1908) notes (in part): "There is in Swinburne's poetry, something like Goethe's 'Stimmung', which our English word 'atmosphere', only imperfectly characterizes. The rapidity of (these) lines, characteristic of a good deal of Swinburne's poetry, gives the same feeling of ceaseless, unrelenting movement, that we get in Goethe's Erlkonig. As in Prometheus Goethe shows the supremacy of 'omnipotent time and fate everlasting', so throughout his poetry Swinburne shows that he has much the same conception of Time and Fate. Not only in 'Stimmung' does Swinburne resemble Goethe, but also in many of his other ideas. In his poem, Hertha, Swinburne gives a more specific idea of his philosophy, which is not unlike that of Goethe, in many ways". A printed copy of the full article by Margaret Stearns Scott is included with this item. Fourth edition, revised. Text in German, with preface & introductions & comprehensive notes in English. Full title off title page: "Clarendon Press Series - German Classics - Edited with English Notes, etc. by C.A. Buchheim, Phil. Doc., F.C.P. - Volume V - Iphigenie auf Tauris, a Drama by Goethe - Fourth Edition, revised". Printed at the Clarendon Press, Oxford, by Horace Hart, printer to the University.
