Signiert. -- Beginn des Aufsatzes: Jede Epoche, jede Generation liest die großen Dichtungen auf verschiedene, manchmal neue Weise. Jedoch ist dies kein Anlaß, sich mit einem hermeneutis…chen Relativismus zu beruhigen. Neue Leser, im Lauf der Zeit, gelangen zu besserem, genauerem Verstehen. Und das gilt schon für die individuelle Lese-Erfahrung. Im Lakonismus der Zahmen Xenien findet sie sich dergestalt: "Anders lesen Knaben den Terenz, -- Anders Grotius -- Mich Knaben ärgerte die Sentenz, -- Die ich nun gelten lassen muß. -- Die Geschichte des Lesers kennt denn auch berichtigte Urteile, Vorurteile, Mißverständnisse. Man könnte von einer Geschichte der Einsicht sprechen. Auf Einsicht ist man vollends angewiesen, wenn man versucht, den Autor besser zu verstehen als er sich selbst verstand. Objektivierte Einsicht aber wird zur Evidenz. Gegen historistische und positivistische Skepsis darf man von vermehrtem Erkenntsnisgewinn, ja von Erkenntnisfortschritt sprechen, wenn Evidenzen die Einsichtswilligen überzeugen. Dafür ist unter anderem das, was man den " Kampf um die Faustdichtung " genannt hat, ein Beispiel par excellence. -- Indessen hat es individuelle Einsicht oft schwer, zur allgemeineren zu werden. Nicht immer wird der Weg von einem anfänglichen Einfall, einem Apercu zur hermeneutischen Schlüssigkeit (mag er logisch gerade oder philologisch krumm sein) als der bessere, wenn auch bisweilen schwierigere erkannt. Diese Erfahrung - auch des Goethedeuters und -auslegers - will ich denn zum Ausgangspunkt meiner heutigen Erwägungen machen. Und sie diene mir zur Rechtfertigung dessen, daß ich heute wiederholend Ihnen einige Einfälle und Schlüsse vortrage, die mir beim häufigen Lesen des zweiten Faust kamen; die insbesondere um eine der rätselhaftesten Szenen von Goethes Weltgedicht kreisen: die P/i/Zezno/j-und-Baucri-Szene am Beginn des 5. Aktes. Wiederholend - denn es ist mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte her, daß ich - im Zusammenhang der Überlegung, welche Bedeutung das poetische Ur-Bild des Wandrers in Goethes dichterischem Haushalt habe - den Wandrer unserer Szene zu verstehen suchte und die sozusagen gegen den mythologischen Strich adaptierte Erzählung aus dem 8. Buch der ovidischen " Metamorphosen " überhaupt. Was ich damals als (vermeintlich) tiefere Einsicht veröffentlichte, blieb aber in der Faust-Forschung unbeachtet. Und so erging es auch dem zweiten Versuch, den ich vor 6 Jahren vorlegte in meinem Beitrag zur Festschrift für Erich Heller (" Das Ärgernis Faust "). Wenn ich heute und hier im anspruchsvollen Kreis von Kennern (vielleicht auch Liebhabern) den dritten Versuch wage, dann mit mephistophelischem Beistand und seine Aufforderung (Vers 1531, Faust Erster Teil) adoptierend : Du mußt es dreimal sagen! Near good signed example with near very good leaves and mesmerizing color plates and illustrations remaining attractive.
