George Cecil Cowing (1888- 1960) was a journalist and author who wrote a daily column for the Pasadena Star-News under the name of The Boulevardier. He was born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and moved to Pasadena, California in 1917. He worked for the Pasadena Star-News as a columnist for 33 years, from 1920 to 1953. Cowing also wrote for several other magazines, including The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and the Saturday Evening Post. His work was often humorous and satirical, and he was known for his keen observations of human nature. "This Side of Hollywood" is a collection of essays and short stories about life in Pasadena in the 1930s. They present an insightful and humorous glimpse of the sometimes strained relationship between Pasadena and Hollywood at the beginning of the film industry. Cowing's essays and short stories offer a unique perspective on the rivalry between these two neighboring cities, as well as the cultural and economic changes that were taking place in Los Angeles at the time.
