About this Item: Longmans, Green & Co, London. Paper covered boards. Condition: Good. First Edition. Undated, but [1902]. 66 pages including 29 full-page and one double-page coloured lithograph illustrations bound in the original pictorial paper-covered boards. This copy has the cover edges scraped and the cover illustration is dusty. The sewing is weak and loose with two leaves detached, one with slight chipping at the edge of the illustration on page 31. Even so, this is a slightly better copy of a book from a much loved series which are often read to destruction. There is a presentation inscription (1902) on the endpaper. "The current anti-golliwog furore in the UK seems to arise from ignorance of the character's origin in the charming and lively series of Edwardian children's books with their spirited lithographic illustrations by Bertha's daughter, Florence K Upton. Golliwogg is consistently resourceful, amiable and chivalrous as he leads his "Girls" - five admiring Dutch dolls - on a series of intermittently catastrophic, but ultimately successful adventures. Altogether, he is one of the most enchanting and admirable of all toy characters. He is lauded by Lord (Kenneth) Clark, for whom he was "an example of chivalry, far more persuasive than the unconvincing Knights of the Arthurian legend. I identified with him completely, and have never quite ceased to do so." He should surely be celebrated as a hero rather than denigrated in the ineterests of vulgar cultural politics." (SW) Size: 11" x 8½" (275mm x 215m). Seller Inventory # 009502

About this Item: Longmans Green & Co, London, 1902. First Edition. 65pp. 28 full-page colour illustrations. In the name of political correctness, Upton's wonderful golliwog - heroic, gentle, gallant and resourceful - has been lumped together with stereotypes and condemned out of hand. In fact, when picture books were filled with images of white-skinned, golden-haired, blue-eyed children, Upton was the first to use an Afro-Caribbean character as the main protagonist. Worn condition. Covers rubbed and marked with wear to edges. Abrasion to lower edge of title page and double page central illustration with some loss. Inner hinges cracked. Marginal closed tears (repaired) Hardback: Illustrated board cover with ochre cloth spine. Seller Inventory # upt04

About this Item: Longmans, Green & Co., London, 1902. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Upton, Florence K. (illustrator). First Edition. 29 full page and one double page spread full colour illustrations plus smaller sepia illustrations on the other text pages. Story line follows Golliwogg and Sarah Jane, Peg, Meg and Midget as they build an airship, decide what clothes they should wear to fly in it and then take a rather calamitous journey. Wonderful example from the Golliwog series of books. Written by mother Bertha and illustrated by daughter Florence (1873-1922) who was born in the U.S. and worked in the U.K. There were 12 Golliwogg books written between 1896 - 1909, this is the 6th of those books. The word Golliwogg, which is no longer considered a socially acceptable word, originated from these books and is listed in the dictionary. Upton illustrated other children's books (see the Vege-men's Revenge for example) and was an accomplished artist, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, London. Condition: Binding: Corners worn, edges rubbed in parts. 3 small (1mm) holes in backstrip. The first quire is a bit loose but the overall binding is intact, as are the endpapers. There was a strip of tape between the first quire and the free front end paper, this has been removed. Interior: Very bright and clean. N.B. The photo may appear as if the cover has a stripe running vertically across the cover of the book, this is due to the fact the book was too wide for me to scan as one image and the photo is a merging of two files. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
