Eine junge Berlinerin, die in Worpswede lebt, ladt den 68-jahrigen Autor im Sommer 1954 telefonisch ein, in Bremen aus seinem Werk vorzulesen. Ben…n antwortet mit einer Einladung zum Eisessen, ohne zu ahnen, dass er nur zehn Wochen spater in einem seiner 252 erstmals veroffentlichten Briefe an Ursula Ziebarth gestehen wird, dass ihre Kollegen denken konnten, sie sei mit einem ,Irren" verheiratet, der standig aus seiner ,Zelle" schreibt. Der Leser wird Zeuge einer intensiven, zartlichen und oft tumultuarischen Liebe. Benn beschreibt sie als ,merkwurdigerweise meines Geistes u. meines Bluts, sehr nahe, sehr, sehr suss". Seine Briefe an Ziebarth sind alles andere als eintonig; sie reflektieren grosse Erfullungen und alltagliche Widrigkeiten. Benn zeigt Offenheit fur Gesprache uber Leben, Bucher, Reisen, Landschaften, Kunstwerke, Gedichte und die Probleme der Lyrik nach dem Krieg. Er beschaftigt sich mit dem ,Nicht-Gedicht" und ist uberzeugt, dass das ,objektive grosse Gedicht" uberholt ist. In seiner Geliebten findet er eine kompetente Gesprachspartnerin. Diese Briefe sind spontan und offen, und sie enthullen Benn in einer neuen, unverfalschten Weise.
