Según se advertía en el prólogo de éste, el fundamento descriptivo es de índole cognitiva, en particular, la teoría de la Gestalt. Para los lectores que se enfrenten directamente al presente libro, haremos notar que la idea básica es la de que toda secuencia, ya sea un turno, un enunciado, una oración o una frase, resulta perceptible (y, por tanto, cognoscible) porque hay un elemento, la figura, que cobra importancia y se destaca respecto de todos los demás elementos de la misma, los cuales constituyen el fondo. Dicha importancia perceptiva resulta reconocible a cuenta de determinadas propiedades formales, sintácticas y semánticas que en cada caso es preciso poner de manifiesto, aunque, en ocasiones, alguno de estos factores pueda faltar. Como las secuencias lingüísticas son muy complejas, con frecuencia lo que ocurre es que dentro del fondo se alzan esquemas gestálticos secundarios constituidos por una figura y un fondo subordinados. Ello ha obligado al autor a adoptar ciertas convenciones de escritura. Confiamos en que estas sencillas convenciones no obstaculicen la lectura del texto. No se le oculta al autor que el esquema figura-fondo podría haberse representado también a base de diagramas arbóreos de dominancia o por otros procedimientos similares, pues, naturalmente, las relaciones gramaticales que intenta representar son las que siempre han ocupado a los gramáticos. Si no lo ha hecho así, es por entender que la convención adoptada refleja mucho mejor la condición gestáltica de todo acto de expresión y de recepción lingüística.
