Original green cloth decorated with a gilt spiral nebula and floral motifs in blind on the front panel, lettered and decorated in gold on the spine. Frontispiece and eleven inserted plates, all with color illustrations except one. The first section includes chapters on the structure of the universe, brightness and distance of stars, clusters and nebulæ, countervailing forces and motions, planetary relations, Saturn and his rings, tails and orbits of comets, universal motion, Heaven and its inhabitants, relations between mind and matter. The second includes chapters on the theories of light, double refraction and polarization, interference of light, conceptions and motions in the ether, intrinsic and adventitious brightness, laws of the spectrum, relations between brightness and colour, spectrum analysis, solar light, photography, Moser's images, permanence of the universe, resistance of the ether, the living prime mover. Ponton, a lawyer and one of the founders of the National Bank of Scotland, was the inventor of a phographic process of considerable importance, which he made available to the public by publishing it on the Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal. With the bookplate and stamps of noted South California doctor H. Bert Ellis. Previous owner's name on the front pastedown endpaper. A touch of wear to spine ends and corner tips.
