Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. Inscribed opposite the title page to a noted book collector: "To Larry Owens, May we find a way to preserve the trees and sustain human dignity for generations to come. William Dietrich." Uncommon signed, and a nice inscription. Also laid in is a handwritten… note on ruled white notepad paper, probably returning books signed, that reads in full: "Hi Larry--I'm delighted that someone in Oklahoma is so interested in these issues. I'm flattered you took the time and effort to send these. Good luck in your own pursuits. Bill Dietrich." His first book. He was at the time the chief science correspondent for The Seattle Times and had won at Pulitzer Prize along with two others for reporting on the Exon Valdez oil spill. This book is a balance and well-regarded look at logging controversy and the spotted owl wars on the Olympic Peninsula. It won the Washington Governor Writer's Award and Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award. He's since written several more nonfiction books and many novels, and is a professor of environmental journalism and writing at Western Washington University. A fine book in fine jacket; the note fine, folded once.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Dust Jacket. KB65.xviii, 476 pp. Map and many illustrations, including full page plates and text cuts. Small octavo, ruled in blind, with brilliant gilt vicious gorilla on the front cover, faded gilt on the faded spine. Glued onto the last free endpaper are two pieces of paper with inscriptions to…fans from P. B. Du Chaillu, one "When shall we go In the Land of the Midnight Sun" (presumably referring to his book of that name) and the other "When shall we go sleigh riding? Next Valentine day", both dated Feb 14, 1874. One of the notes has a tear repaired with old tape that has browned. Spine covers are rubbed and worn at the extremities, top of spine a little chipped with a short tear, back joint is rubbed. Interior is clean with very occasional pencil marginalia, two pages have short edge tears, both repaired with clear tape that has browned, bit shaken, but otherwise a good copy. Du Chaillu's first expedition to Equatorial Africa was from 1855-1859, and the second from 1863-1865. He lays to claim to be "the first white man who penetrated into that vast and unbroken forest." He remarked on the fact that there were no beasts of burden and no roads in this part of Africa, but "many strange varieties of apes, headed by the King of the African forest, the Gorilla," and, indeed, he was the first westerner to confirm the existence of the great beasts. "In this strange and weird country I travelled alone, making friends with the various tribes, studying their language, and always being passed on from one to another with friendly commendation." He was also the first westerner to confirm reports of pygmy peoples living in the African forests. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 476 pages; Signed by Author.
