Grey cloth and 3/4 leather-covered boards, gilt spine lettering & decoration, 8 1/2 x 5 7/8 inches, 400 pp, index, numerous b/w illustrations (including numerous photographs), color frontispiece map of California with tissue guard, top edge gilt. Needs repair/restoration (front board detached; upper portion of backstrip starting; lower 1 3/8 inch portion of backstrip missing). See photos. Otherwise pages clean and remainder of binding strong. First edition thus (first printed in 1914 by Hearst). Signed & dated by author in Nov. 1922 with message "Joy to you who read the book!" Ex libris sticker on front endpaper from renowned tuberculosis pioneer in California, Robert Alway Peers (1875-1970). Rust-colored boards are bright with light nicks & rubbing & light stains on rear board. Interior pages excellent w/ light toning. No writing, creases, tears. 400 pages, illustrated throughout. Includes original insert. See photos.

Autographed edition, limited to 100 copies, SIGNED by Markham, this is #85. 3/4 black leather with grey cloth boards, gilt spine decoration. 8 1/2 x 5 3/4". 400pp. incl index. Nicely illustrated throughout. Light rubbing to spine, bottom edge a little frayed. Some light foxing to endpapers and occasionally within. Very nice copy.
