However unsatisfactory classification by genre is, there are few other relatively objective ways of understanding the interrelationships among works and authors of widely different periods. In the case of classical literature, which remains deeply rooted in the traditions of a given form and much concerned with previous models, genre must often be the necessary starting point for assessing a given authors development and originality. A good recent example is Oswyn Murrays comparison of Horaces sympotic poetry to that of Alcaeus and the Hellenistic epigram. - Wikipedia: Charles Paul Segal (March 19, 1936 January 1, 2002) was an American classicist renowned for his application of critical theory to ancient texts. Although his work spanned a variety of Latin and Greek genres, he is best known for his work on Greek tragedy.
