Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Although this copy is not in good condition, it is notable in that the author inscribed it to the widow of the person to whom it was dedicated: Underneath the printed dedication, "In memory of Carleton Stevens Coon, gifted scholar, inspiring teacher, valued friend," the author wrote in blue pen, "and with much love to Lisa, who did a lot more than keep the home fires burning! John P." Lisa is Carleton Coon's widow, Lisa Dougherty Geddes; this copy was added to Dr. Coon's book collection after he passed away on 3 June 1981. Its binding and endpapers have soil, with a particularly unsightly stain (with small chips) in the bottom margin of the final leaf; several other margins have soil and/or wear; outer edges have foxing and/or soil; top corner of free front endpaper has stamp indicating that this copy was not accessioned by an academic library; book is a bit musty as well; corners bumped; pages have small corner crease; tight, body of text clean. 308 p., illustrated. A rough copy with important provenance. [b 724]. Signed by Author(s).
