Trade paperback. Condition: Good. Alan Elsner (photographs) (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. xii, 256 pages. Footnote. Illustrations. Fold-out map with color. A Note on Sources. Bibliography. Cover has wear and soiling. Top fore-corners of a number of pages curved. Front cover creased with small tear at top of spine. Interior condition good to very good. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. Inscription reads For Haia Best Wishes Alan Elsner. Foreword by David Cesarani. Alan Elsner has had a long career at the top ranks of American and international journalism prior to joining J Street. As State Department and later White House correspondent for Reuters News Agency, Elsner traveled the world with Secretaries of State and was on first name terms with presidents and vice presidents. His sharp questioning during the Rwanda genocide forced the United States to change its policy and was later highlighted in the Hollywood movie "Hotel Rwanda." As Reuters National Correspondent, Elsner was the agency's chief writer on 9/11/2001 and his byline was featured on the agency's stories that day and through the subsequent period. Elsner is the author of two novels and two works of nonfiction. His first book, "Gates of Injustice: The Crisis in America's Prisons," was hailed by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy as a "wake-up call" and welcomed by the political left and right. His first novel, "The Nazi Hunter," was described by Publishers' Weekly as "a gripping debut thriller and a compelling tale." Winner of the Knight International Journalism fellowship, Elsner spent a year in Romania in 2007 teaching journalism to students and professionals and strengthening the values of a free media. Relates the story of Elsner's father, Eugene, born in Odessa in 1918, and his uncle, Mark, born in Nowy S cz in 1923. They grew up in Nowy S cz and fled to Soviet-occupied Lvov when the Germans invaded. They and their cousin, Henek, were sent to a gulag in the north and then evacuated to Soviet Central Asia. Near death from starvation, they were released after 18 months and traveled thousands of miles across the Soviet Union, passing through Central Asia, before finding refuge in a Cossack village in the Caucasus. When Stalin made a pact with the Polish government-in-exile and Polish prisoners in the USSR were amnestied, the brothers were about to joined Anders' army, but encountered anti-Semitism among the recruits. They found temporary refuge in Nezlobnaya in the Caucasus until the Germans arrived. After adopting the Slavic family name Olesiuk, Gene became a translator for the Germans but also helped the resistance. The brothers then joined another "Polish" army, the Soviet Kosciusko Division. While fighting against German forces, the brothers were temporarily separated, then reunited 30 miles from the German border. Gene had been severely wounded and presumed dead. He encountered Polish anti-Semitism again, among POWs, just before the end of the war. Their younger brother had been killed in the Nowy S cz ghetto and their parents in Be ec. The author visited this site with his father and, disturbed at the lack of a monument there, worked to remedy the situation.
