Lynn Justice with "I hope you like the book and the articles" written on the front free endpaper in very good condition in very good dust jacket. Dust jacket has some wrinkling on the edges and corners, book has some white residue on the bottom cover edges, dust jacket and book have some bumped corners, light discoloration and shelf wear. 9.25"x6.25", 189 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. PAYDAY is the story of Orville Fletcher, an Indiana farm boy, who fulfilled his dream of living in Latin America with the woman of his dreams. He worked his way to the top of the organization of a Texas chemical group based in Latin America. Once there, he chose to leave his secure future and go solo in the high risk business of industrial security in Central America during the tumultuous decade of the eighties. Not many were fortunate enough to possess Orville's particular set of skills. He was intuitive and adroit in his problem solving skills, he never gave up easily, and he was an expert pilot. His work frequently involved getting someone into or out of a tight spot in the middle of some war or natural disaster, and there always seemed to be an abundance of those situations in Central America. Being able to get someplace quick and knowing what to do in challenging situations, proved invaluable to those who sought out his help. He approached each mission with interest knowing that he would have to be nimble to be able to accomplish his goal. Would this be true of his latest mission as well? Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed and inscribed by the author, with a photograph laid-in. Octavo, softbound (full-color illus. green wrappers), 390 pp. Fine. From Preface: Late in the summer of 1966, my wie and I sold most of our possessions, emptied our bank account -- this last a rather easy thing to do -- packed our car with things we thought we would need, called the Salvation Army to come pick up what was left over. With two young daughters, a French poodle and seventeen hundred dollars, we headed south to Mexico. Crossing into Mexico, we realized a new chapter in our lives had begun. I'm sure, however, none of us suspected that over two decades would pass before any of us would see the United States again. About a year previous to our move, I had begun to suffer an acute attack of wanderlust. In one of my better PR campaigns I sold the family on Alaska. We would live off the land as our forefathers had. We would build a lodge -- somewhere. I would become a legendary hunter and guide. Life might be difficult at times, but uncluttered by societies entrapments and unnecessary accouterments. At this point, Parney wanted a list of the accouterments we would be doing without. Objections were almost nonexistent, however. I am married to a remarkable woman who, if anything, exceeds my desire to see and experience anyplace new. There are times when the needle of my inner compass seems to point the wrong way. I mean by that, regardless of how ell I layout plans in advance, I often wind up doing something about one hudnred and eighty degrees from my original intent. Family and friends have noticed this minor glitch, so it came as no surprise, when carrying all our snow survival gear -- and knowing nothing about where we were going -- headed south into the tropics. Circumstances and six months later found us living in a wilderness known as the Peten in the northern territory of Guatemala. This was to be our home for the next several years. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Signed by outhor on title page. SILENCE ON THE MOUNTAIN is a virtuoso work of reporting and a masterfully plotted narrative tracing the history of Guatemala's thirty-six-year internal war, a conflict that claimed the lives of some 200,000 people, the vast majority of whom died (or were "disappeared") at the hands of the U.S.-backed military government. Written by Daniel Wilkinson, a young human rights worker, the story begins in 1993, when the author decides to investigate the arson of a coffee plantation's manor house by a band of guerrillas. The questions surrounding this incident soon broaden into a complex mystery whose solution requires Wilkinson to dig up the largely unwritten history of the country's recent civil war, following its roots back to a land reform movement that was derailed by a U.S.-sponsored military coup in 1954 and to the origins of a plantation system that put Guatemala's Mayan Indians to work picking coffee beans for the American and European markets. Decades of terror-inspired fear have led the Guatemalans to adopt a survival strategy of silence so complete that it verges on collective amnesia. The author's great triumph is that he finds a way for people to tell their stories, and it is through these stories?dramatic, intimate, heartbreaking?that we are shown the anatomy of a thwarted revolution that has relevance not only to Guatemala but also to countless places around the world where terror has been used as a political tool. As new, unread, first edition, first printing, in fine, mylar-protected dust cover. {Not remainder-marked or price-clipped} NFBS1. Signed by Author(s).
