C'est le sort du poète fuyant l'intrigue pour atteindre à quelque vaine renommée [.]. Votre sentence exempte de…la rigueur qu'on prête à certain jugement dernier est tout aussi différente des jambes poursuivant l'homme en rupture de tout (j'en suis un) lorsqu'on dit la loi par défaut contre lui. Ce qui m'a le plus touché c'est d'être reconnu par vous comme un esprit terrestre, au sens visible que nous attachons tous deux à ce mot : la terre étant pour moitié enfer et pour l'autre moitié le paradis qu'on imagine soi-même [.]». Dès qu'il verra José Corti, son éditeur, il lui demandera des exemplaires de ses Sténogrammes. Dans une seconde lettre, il fait une longue et élogieuse analyse critique de son manuscrit, Jean des Etoiles. «C'est une oeuvre bouleversante, hallucinante par endroits, voire magique par la simplicité des moyens d'écriture [.]. A mes yeux, la partie la plus "prenante" de ce roman commence dès le retour du père parmi les siens. Cet inconnu, ce revenant, se dresse entre la mère et l'enfant qui lui est amoureusement attaché. Comment ne changerait-il pas alors de peau ? Et non seulement de peau mais encore dans sa vie intime [.]. Très signifiante est la petite guerre des sexes que se livrent les jeunes gens, ou plutôt celle que mènent les jeunes hommes aux filles - l'ennemie avant de devenir l'amante. C'est là un processus érotique fatal [.]. Enfin, la mort est votre hantise, comme elle l'est aussi pour moi bien que je ne la redoute point [.]. Enfin, j'ai lu avec délices la paraphrase poétique qui exalte les jeux de cartes dont l'explication historique, très matérialiste, est d'une lumineuse édification sociale [.]».
