Practical Tools: It includes Chinese characters throughout the text to help travelers ask locals for directions. Visual Aids: The first edition typically features three meticulous folding maps and plans, including a detailed map of the Legation Quarter. Cultural Note: Fischer explicitly requested that visitors refrain from defacing buildings or writing on tombs. [This description may have been translated by AI.].

Opening with a 'sketch of China proper shewing the places open to foreign intercourse 1866', the volume includes maps and plans of Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Macao, Shantou, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Taiwan, Ningbo, Shanghai, the Yangtze River ports, Tianjin, and Beijing, as well as of Nagasaki, Yokohama, Edo, and Hakodate. The text is extremely thorough, the section on Hong Kong, for example, describing, inter alia, its geography, history (in particular from 1839), public buildings, roads, 'amusements', newspapers, population, hotels, market prices, sanitary conditions, botany and geology, police force, and missions. A plate showing 'Japanese coinage' appears within the section on Nagasaki. The volume ends with an appendix detailing 'means of transport between England, France, and America, and China and Japan', illustrated with a map showing 'the ocean steam routes of the world', and with a 'catalogue of books, &c., on China and Japan'. 8vo. VIII, (2), 668, (2), XLVIII, (2), 26, (2) pp. With 29 mostly folded maps and charts, block-printed in colour. Recent half morocco with gilt lettering on spine. First edition; the scarce original printing. - As trade between the East and the West grew in the mid-19th century, increasing numbers of Westerners travelled to China and Japan, and in 1867 this guide to the key port cities such as Hong Kong and Nagasaki was published in both Hong Kong and London. Its editor, Nicholas Belfield Dennys (ca 1813-99), claimed it was the first such comprehensive handbook printed for public distribution. Intended for visitors and new residents, the guide was originally typeset in China, allowing place names and other words to be printed in Chinese characters. The specially commissioned maps were also engraved in China. The book includes physical descriptions and brief histories of over twenty cities, details of schools and libraries, population statistics and much practical information, as well as a list of other publications on China and Japan. It is a valuable historical source on East Asia during a period of rapid change. - Includes appendices, folding maps, a folding illustration of "Japanese Coinage", and one page "Reference to Map of Peking" (complete as called for in the Table of Contents, "List of Maps, &c". Stamp of the Danish Royal Navy Library ("Marinens Bibliothek") and Officers' School on title-page. Internally clean and fine.

Add to basketFirst edition, first printing, of this uncommon tourist guide to Beijing at the twilight of the imperial era. While the second edition (1924) is well-represented in commerce, the first is much scarcer. Guide to Peking and its Environs was published on the cusp of a sea change in East Asian tourism, heralded by Thomas Cook opening its office in Shanghai in 1910. Cook's arrival signalled a shift toward "package" tourism - visitors following prearranged itineraries while looked after by the company's agents on the ground. In contrast to Cook's pared-down guides, Fischer includes everything the independent traveller might need, such as in-text Chinese characters to help travellers ask locals for directions. The three maps offer a level of detail at odds with other similar publications. Fischer is keen to remind visitors to keep their artistic tendencies at bay: "It is hoped that when visiting tombs and places of interest in and about Peking, or in China generally, visitors will refrain from writing [on] or in anyway defacing the buildings and other places of interest" (p. 8). Small octavo. Half-tone frontispiece and 27 plates, 3 folding maps and plans. Original red illustrated wrappers, rebacked to style with red card, front cover lettered in gilt, rear cover lettered in black. Rubbing and creasing, maps at rear tipped back in on new tissue stubs, one map with old adhesive tape repair on verso: a very good copy.

E. S. Fischer whose Chinese name is Fei Shih, Xmas 1940". [ix], 237, xii(ads.)pp. Tientsin/Peking, Tientsin Press, "Fei-shih" (the Pityful one) is a pseudonym of Emil Sigmund Fischer (1865-1945), a banker from Vienna. Fischer came to China in 1894 and worked in Shanghai until 1898, before moving to Tientsin. He died in February 1945 in a Japanese PoW camp. This is one of the most accurate and well-researched guides to the capital and its surroundings with a wealth of maps, plans and illustrations. On the tile-page Fischer is credited with being awarded a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco in 1915 - without specifying what the award was for. The first edition was published in Peking in 1909. .
