This is a sammelband, or nonce-volume, comprising of five separately printed works, largely relating to the history of Edinburgh and Scotland. Contents are: 1 - Old Edinburgh with Notes on its Ecclesiastical Antiquities (anonymous).… 1877, presumed first edition. 31pp. and a folding plan of Edinburgh. 2 - Saint Margaret Queen of Scotland with a Description of Saint Margaret's Chapel, Castle Guide, and Guide to the Principal Sights of Edinburgh compiled and written for the Chapel-Keeper. No stated date c1870, possible first edition. 32pp. 3 - The Regalia of Scotland by Sir Walter Scott. No stated date c1870s, reprint. 34pp. (lacking half title), vignette on the title-page and 3 in-text illustrations. 4 - The Canongate of Edinburgh: Its History, Remarkable Houses, and Traditions by Rev. Andrew R. Bonar. 1865, presumed first edition. [ii], 42pp., 1 full-page and 1 in-text illustration. The author has inscribed and signed the title-page. 5 - The Greyfriars Churchyard: A Lecture Delivered to the Boys of George Heriot's Hospital, on January 26, 1866, by ex-treasurer Greig. No stated date but presumed to be 1866 and first edition. [i], 40pp. The booklets are bound in slightly later dark purple cloth covered boards with 'Old Edinburgh &c.' stamped in gold on the spine. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards. The spine has faded to a brown colour and there is also fading down about 1/2" of the spine edge of both boards and along part of the top edge of the rear board. The spine ends are bumped with some damage and loss to the cloth at the bottom of the spine and there is a split of about 1" in the cloth on the bottom of the front spine edge and top 1/2" of the rear spine edge. The contents are tight and clean with some scattered but mostly light foxing. The title-page of the first booklet and last page of the last booklet are slightly browned with light soiling. The title-page to the Lecture on Greyfriar's Churchyard is also soiled. The front endpapers are browned and foxed with some pencil notes by a previous owner and the rear endpapers are lightly foxed. Inscription by the author at the top of the title page of "The Canongate of Edinburgh" thus "James Bonar Esq with kind regards from Andrew R. Bonar". Opposite the title page of the first book, in pencil, is the name "Horatius Bonar". We assume this is the signature of the Scottish minister and hymn writer. SIGNED COPY.

Presentation copy, inscribed to verso of front blank fly-…leaf; 'Mr. Drummond, / of Blairdrummond, / with most respectful compliments from / The Author.' The sole edition of James M'Nayr's (1757/8-1808) accessible guide for travellers to the environs of the Highlands of Scotland, providing reports on the condition of roads and the quality of inn accommodation for a tour to be ideally taken 'from the middle of July till the end of August'. M'Nayr, following soon after the commencement of his suggested route, implores tourists to make an excursion to the Blair Drummond estate, Perthshire; the house, once the residence of renowned Enlightenment polymath Lord Kames, was inherited by his son George Home Drummond - to whom this copy is inscribed. The younger laird completed his father's work in draining the surrounding moss land, utilising Meikle's great wheel installed in 1787 - an undertaking M'Nayr enthusiastically relates. However, the author is not concerned merely with the picturesque, providing an exuberant account of 'New Lanark and Mr. Dales cotton mills'. ESTC T35913. Size: 8vo.

The volumes not only contain the index which contains the author's own amendments but also has the master copy of each of the 160 maps. The first volume contains the first 80 maps wh…ich have been stuck to blank sheets by the author with each separate description being also a-fixed. Additionally the first volume contains Bradshaw's Map Guides to Edinburgh, Glasgow, The Lake District, Plymouth and Torquay. Volume Two is similarly constructed, containing the original second 80 guides with Bradshaws Plans of Birmingham, Hull, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield an the tourist guide map to the Isle of Wight together with Bradshaw's Railway Station and Guide Map to The Environs of London25 Miles Round. The books are in exceptionally good condition and really belong in a museum. They are a unique memorial of early cycling. Both volumes have been recently rebound in mustard coloured buckram with leather titling pieces making them a very handsome set indeed. Signed by Author(s).

A lovely presentation copy of a a work which is often found in poor condition and often missing the rather delicate large folding maps. The clan chiefs of Chisolm are referred to in glowing terms in the guide to Loch Ness-side and Urquhart Castle (pp586-7). George and Peter Anderson were brothers who were in business together as solicitors in Inverness.
