"Ham on Rye" is Charles Bukowski's fourth novel and the most moving of all his books, dealing with his early years in Los Angeles, and in particular with his difficult relationship with his father. The novel begins against the backdrop of an America devastated by the Depression and takes the Chinaski legend up to the bombing of Pearl Harbour. ***"This Rebel Inc edition marks the first UK publication of what is arguably Bukowski's finest work and has a specially commissioned introduction by Roddy Doyle." ***"A scorching account of a childhood, an adolescence, a life of ugliness, pain, escape, alcohol, loneliness. Often it's funny - often it's disturbing - Ham on Rye is a powerful book." Roddy Doyle (Quote and review taken from the back cover) ***'Henry Charles Bukowski [Aug 16, 1920 - Mar 9, 1994] was a German-born American poet, novelist, and short story writer. His writing was influenced by the social, cultural, and economic ambience of his home city of Los Angeles. His work addresses the ordinary lives of poor Americans, the act of writing, alcohol, relationships with women, and the drudgery of work. Bukowski wrote thousands of poems, hundreds of short stories and six novels, eventually publishing over 60 books. The FBI kept a file on him as a result of his column Notes of a Dirty Old Man in the LA underground newspaper Open City. Bukowski published extensively in small literary magazines and with small presses beginning in the early 1940s and continuing on through the early 1990s. As noted by one reviewer, "Bukowski continued to be, thanks to his antics and deliberate clownish performances, the king of the underground and the epitome of the littles in the ensuing decades, stressing his loyalty to those small press editors who had first championed his work and consolidating his presence in new ventures such as the New York Quarterly, Chiron Review, or Slipstream." Some of these works include his "Poems Written Before Jumping Out of an 8 Story Window", published by his friend and fellow poet Charles Potts, and better known works such as "Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame". These poems and stories were later republished by John Martin's Black Sparrow Pres as collected volumes of his work. Regarding Bukowski's enduring popular appeal, Adam Kirsch of The New Yorker wrote, "the secret of Bukowski's appeal [is that] he combines the confessional poet's promise of intimacy with the larger-than-life aplomb of a pulp-fiction hero." Since his death in March 1994, Bukowski has been the subject of a number of critical articles and books about both his life and writings, despite his work having received relatively little attention from academic critics in the United States during his lifetime. In contrast, Bukowski enjoyed extraordinary fame in Europe. (Wiki) ***A nice copy of the first UK edition of this classic work by Bukowski - published as a PBO. Surprisingly uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Written in the first person, the novel follows Henry Chinaski, Bukowski's thinly veiled alter ego, during his early years. Written in Bukowski's characteristically straightforward prose, the novel tells of his coming-of-age in Los Angeles during the Great Depression. In 1969, Bukowski accepted an offer from Black Sparrow Press publisher John Martin and quit his post office job to dedicate himself to full-time writing. He was then 49 years old. As he explained in a letter at the time, "I have one of two choices - stay in the post office and go crazy . or stay out here and play at writer and starve. I have decided to starve.".

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. Bukowski, Charles (illustrator). First and Limited Edition. One of 100 (126 total) signed/numbered hardcover copies with original artwork, octavo size, 287 pp., signed at colophon. Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) was "a prolific underground writer who used his poetry and prose to depict the depravity of urban life and the downtrodden in American society. A cult hero, Bukowski relied on experience, emotion, and imagination in his work, using direct language and violent and sexual imagery" (n.b., from the web site of the Poetry Foundation). As much as he achieved popular acclaim during his lifetime, his reputation and following have only increased after his death. In addition to being an author, Bukowski also was an artist: he painted on 6" by 9" paper "with thick layers of acrylics, oil paint, watercolors, pastels, crayons, pens - whatever was at hand. They were sent to Black Sparrow [whose editor, John Martin, was a friend of Bukowski's] where they were bound into special hardcover first editions of his books" (n.b., from the web site of Bukowski [dot] net). This volume, "Ham on Rye" is Bukowski's semi-autobiograhical coming-of-age novel; it explores many themes which would crop up often in his writings, including disenfranchisement and the myth of the American Dream: "I guess the only time most people think about injustice is when it happens to them." This volume No. 59 of the 126 signed/numbered hardcover copies with original artwork, a colourful abstract work filled with primary colours over which can be discerned the grey outlines of facial features, perhaps evoking the indivitual overwhelmed by the system, another favourite theme. ___DESCRIPTION: Blue cloth shelfback with paper spine label with blue and red lettering, yellow paper over boards with half-tone reproductions of photographs and red and blue lettering on the front, coloured rules on the rear board, turquoise blue endpapers, title page in red, blue and yellow, in addition to the 126 deluxe copies there were 1200 standard copies; octavo size (9.25" by 6.25"), pagination: [1-8] 9-283 [1, blank] [1, colophon, signed by Bukowski in black ink] [1, blank] [1, black and white photograph of Bukowski with bio]. In a dust wrapper of clear acetate from the publisher. ___CONDITION: Fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The publisher's acetate dust wrapper near fine with light overall marks. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Published by Black Sparrow Press in 1982, this is the Signed First Edition of Ham on Rye, Charles Bukowski's autobiographical tales of growing up. This is #37 of 350 signed copies of the book. This copy comes with a copy of Bukowski's Summer 1939 yearbook from Los Angeles High School, which was used for the cover of the book. It also comes with the Senior Prom Invitation for the class, which was the basis of perhaps the most memorable coming-of-age passage from the novel. (The excerpt from the book is attached.) The book is in Near Fine-minus condition with spotting on the page edges, not impacting the pages themselves. There is also a small lean to the spine from the stitched binding being slightly loose, probably from the book being stacked. The covers and cloth spine are both in Fine condition with no fading or marks to the white positions of the covers. The yearbook has many inscriptions and has held up very nicely over the years. The yarn from the invitation is missing, with the invitation having been pasted in a scrap book at some point. This copy came from estate of Red Stodolsky, owner of Baroque Book Store and a close friend of Charles Bukowski. Bukowski would go by Red's shop regularly and the two would go to lunch at Musso & Frank Grill. One of Bukowski's most sought-after titles, thw whole package is unique and rare. I have never seen another invitation. Additional photos available. File Box 3, Shelf 1, Case 7. Signed by Author(s).
