I su…oi primi acquisti furono effettuati intorno al 1785, a Parigi, e continuarono fino alla sua vecchiaia. Quando vendette Fonthill, nel 1822, a John Farquhar (che ne rivendette il contenuto, inclusa la biblioteca, il 9 settembre 1823), trasferì tutti i libri di valore nella sua nuova residenza a Lansdowne Terrace, Bath, dove fu sepolto 1844. Le sue collezioni d'arte, insieme ai suoi libri e alle stampe, andarono a suo genero, il decimo duca di Hamilton.
