This copy was acquired when part of the family collection was purchased from the estate of the descendants of the author of the same surname. It is signed on the ffep: "With love from Mark (Patrick), 16/6/33" The front and spine of the rather distinctive and colourful dust jacket is stuck on the back paste down and across onto the facing free end paper. This seems rather odd but at least it has partially preserved the jacket. There is furthermore a newspaper clipping stuck onto a back end paper from The Times, Aug. 1933 giving a favourable review of the book and its author, the MP for Tavistock. In addition there is also a letter from the author, Mark Patrick, which is stuck to another back end paper, headed with a London address of 32 Avenue Road, Regent's Park, N.W.8 which informs the recipient in a fairly whimsical manner, the handwritting is hard to read but on the following lines: "My Dear Martin (?) I sent you a copy of this book on Russia. Hasn't it got a beautiful cover? It's a Irrich (?) poster. (????) perhaps, is not so loud!, Yours, Mark. PS It's not on sale for another 10 days." There is a date inscribed on the letter at the top corner, at an angle, of June 16th, 53 which may have been added at a later year to when the letter was written, since that would have been 1933. Perhaps this date just notes when the letter was discovered or referenced. The overall condition of the book is pretty sound, with toning to the prelim pages and to the page block edges. The black cloth boards appear a little spotted and have a little knocking to the fore edge corner tips. In all this is rather a unique piece with great provenance. Signed by Author(s).
