The Dedication Copy, inscribed by the author under his pseudonym to his wife, Hazel (Lynne) Burgess, on the front endpaper in blue ink: "To Hazel / for her birthday / 28…th Sept, 1961 / Joseph Kell"-beneath which Burgess has added, in red ink, the revealing note: "Joseph Kell is / Anthony Burgess." This is the second of only two novels published under the "Joseph Kell" pseudonym and among the scarcest Burgess titles to appear with an authorial presentation. The association could not be closer: Burgess dedicated the book to Hazel (Lynne), his first wife, to whom he would dedicate many of his works during their marriage, making this an extraordinary copy in every respect. A very good example, showing some foxing and evidence of use in the publisher's nubby yellow and red spotted cloth, with metallic blue spine lettering. Housed in a near fine, bright blue pictorial dustwrapper (price-clipped, and likely supplied). Burgess (1917-1993), best remembered for A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1962), published the year after ONE HAND CLAPPING, was one of the most versatile literary figures of the 20th century. This novel-written under the Kell pseudonym-reflects his early exploration of cultural decline, materialism, and the "dumbing down" of society, themes that would continue to haunt his work. A true high point for any Burgess collection. Signed by Author.
