A HAWK AT WAR The Peninsular War Reminiscences of General Sir Thomas Brotherton, CB Bryan Perrett (Editor) Picton Publishing, Chippenham. 1986 First edition. 0948251220 84pp Illustrated Hardback. When Captain Thomas Brotherton joined the 14th Light Dragoons, better known as the Hawks because of the Prussian Eagle badge conferred on them by the Duchess of York in 1798, he was at 22 already a veteran with a fierce baptism of fire and two campaigns behind him. He was fully conversant with the details of his profession, a good horseman and a skilled swordsman. his brother officers found him a most amiable member of the mess with a fund of amusing stories, many of which were directed against himself, and the ability to enliven a dull moment with a tune on his fiddle. his reminiscences were not set down until much later in his life. They are not a complete record, nor was it ever intended that they should be, but it seems probable that Conan Doyle knew of them since many of Brotherton's adventures bear a striking resemblance to those of the famous Brigadier Gerard. Brotherton's anecdotes are the authentic voice of the Peninsula and through them we understand a little better the nature of the light cavalryman's war. Ref D3.
