Browning to endpapers, title a little soiled, mild foxing throughout, a few pages poorly opened, trimmed a little short in spots almost touching the running title. A nice pair, about very good overall. Largely in italic type with some text in Roman. (12), 251 leaves; 232 (i.e. 233), 8 leaves Firs published in 1565, Giraldi's tales are most famous for providing the plots to Measure for Measure (probably through the intermediary of Whetstone's Promos and Cassandra) and Othello. Numerosi capilettera xilografici nt. Piccole macchie d'inchiostro non invasive al taglio verticale. Lacuna di pochi centimetri all'angolo sup.della c.225, con interessamento delle prime 6 righe di testo. Nel ns.esemplare il titolo Parte seconda è manoscritto. A collection of tales first published in the sixteenth century and somewhat in the manner of Boccaccio. The author, Giraldi (1504-1573), is thought to have helped furnished the plots of Othello and Measure for Measure to Shakespeare. Later bookplate of Kenneth Rapoport.

First Zopini edition of Giraldi Cinzio's "Hecatommithi," a collection of one hundred (and ten) novels, which shaped Italian Renaissance rhetoric and notably influenced the plot of Shakespeare's "Othello." Giambattista Giraldi was born in Ferrara in 1504 and was a student of rhetoric and philosophy of some eminence, where he eventually held university chair of belles-lettres after Celio Calcagnini. While teaching in Ferrara, Giraldi became interested in publishing works in the vernacular and began writing "novelle" as early as 1528. Among the prose works of Giraldi, who took the nickname "Il Cinzio," was the Hecatommithi (The Hundred Stories). The Hecatommithi was a collection of a hundred and ten moralizing tales, which were told in the style of Boccaccio's Decameron, but also resembled the work of Giraldi's contemporary rhetoricians, like Bandello. In it, the author pretends that ten ladies and gentleman were escaping the sack of Rome in 1527 and during their voyage to Marseilles entertained each other with stories on love, infidelity, and tragedy. The stories notably provided the basis for eight of his later plays. The Hecatommithi was printed at a deeply religious time when moral and political censorship was rampant. The first edition of the Hecatommithi was printed in 1565 in Mondovi (by Torrentino), where Giraldi also held a significant teaching position. The next year Scotto of Venice produced a second edition of the Hecatommithi and Alaris made four subsequent editions up to the year 1574. In 1580, the Zopini brothers revived the popular vernacular work with their printing; a second edition followed in 1584. The Hecatommithi concluded in 1606 with Venetian editions of Deuchino and Pulciani. As shown by the numerous editions, this work enjoyed thorough success during the second half of the sixteenth century in Italy. Grande e fresca marca dello stampatore ai frontespizi. Grandi capilettera figurati incisi in legno, molti dei quali estremamente piacevoli e non banali, provenienti da differenti collezioni. Qualche leggera fioritura e due forellini di tarlo riparati al margine bianco in fine del secondo volume; un interessante difetto (che quasi si fa pregio) al lembo superiore della carta s5 del primo volume, difficile da notare a prima vista: anticamente, un possessore deve aver distrattamente bagnato il lembo superiore esterno della pagina con conseguente sbiadimento della parte terminale di alcune righe nella sezione di testo d'angolo, il quale testo è stato poi finemente ricalcato ad inchiostro da mano a dir poco abilissima, quasi non sembrando affatto ritoccato. Legatura settecentesca in piena pergamena con titoli impressi in oro su tassello dipinto al dorso. Esempalre ricco di prestigiose note di possesso tardo secentesche, settecentesche e ottocentesche al foglio di guardia e al frontespizio: la più antica è "Di Josephi Jacobi de Rubeij Romani" (forse un membro della dinastia dei de' Rossi, famosi stampatori attivi a Roma?), poi "1739 / di Giaco: Soranzo" (1686-1761, senatore della Repubblica di Venezia e celebre bibliofilo, la cui collezione di codici manoscritti è ora alla Marciana, mentre i suoi libri a stampa vennero venduti: si veda "Catalogo de' libri che saranno posti in vendita nella città di Padoua l'anno 1780", Padova 1780), poi "di Gennaro Giannelli" (noto medico e letterato romano, nonché grande collezionista, i cui libri si trovano sparsi per le biblioteche di tutto il mondo), e un'ultimo autografo, meno leggibile (Giacinto?), datato 1870. Bound in 18th century full light brown morocco leather. 6 compartments, with gold lettering and lovely ornaments. a.e.g. Marbled endpapers. The volumes remain bright, clean and in remarkable condition. The first edition was published one year earlier in 1565. Fine.

Due volumi legati in uno di cm. 21, cc. (8) 251 + 1b; (4) (4) -232 (8). Marchi tipografici ai due frontespizi e molti bei capolettera figurati. Bella e solida legatura coeva in piena pergamena semirigida con unghie e titoli manoscritti al dorso. La legatura porta impressi al piatto la data: 1573 e le iniziali: I.B.D. (legatura di provenienza verosimilmente germanica). Solo un po' sfrangiate le carte di guardia ed una mancanza di carta all'angolo della carta 197 del primo volume che tocca alcune lettere di una parola. Esemplare peraltro genuino, fresco e marginoso, in eccellente stato di conservazione. Terza edizione di questa celebre raccolta di novelle apparsa in originale nel 1565. Seguendo lo stile e gli schemi del Decamerone, Giraldi costruisce una serie di racconti narrati per bocca di un gruppo di dame e gentiluomini sfuggita al sacco di Roma del 1527 e imbarcatasi a Civitavecchia alla volta di Marsiglia. Anche i temi trattati si avvicinano spesso alla licenziosità del Boccaccio. Alcune novelle furono di ispirazione per grandi opere del tempo di autori quali Shakespeare, Beaumont e Fletcher. Non comune, soprattutto in tale legatura e stato di conservazione.

Mezza pergamena ottocentesca con tassello e titolo dor. Raccolta di novelle di Cinzio Giraldi (Ferrara, 1504 - 1573), che si immaginano narrate su una nave da un gruppo di gentildonne e gentiluomini, che erano scampati dal "sacco di Roma" del 1527. Le novelle sono complessivamente centotredici: due di queste sono particolarmente conosciute perché ispirarono Shakespeare per le trame di Otello e di Misura per Misura. Rara seconda edizione (la prima fu stampata a Mondovì nel 1565). Qualche forellino di tarlo alle ultime cc. che tocca minimamente il testo e leggere ossidazioni della carta, comunque un buon esemplare.

Due parti in un volume in-4to (cm. 23) di pp. (16), 500; (12), 464, impresa tipografica ai 2 frontespizi e grandi iniziali decorate in xilografia. Pergamena molle coeva, titolo manoscritto al dorso (mancano i legacci). Nota manoscritta alle sguardie. Alla prima e ultima carta traccia di antico timbro nobiliare. Lieve alone all'angolo dell'ultima parte ma nel complesso ottimo esemplare. Il quaderno da pp. 133 a 140 proviene dall'edizione del Deuchino del 1608 (il testo esattamente seguente e nel medesimo carattere corsivo); da come si presenta l'esemplare, il quaderno sostituito e la pagina seguente paiono una censura della Novella III "Un giudeo, in habito di prete? Rara seconda edizione, considerata molto più corretta della prima, della celebre raccolta di centotredici novelle di Cinzio Giraldi (Ferrara, 1504-1573), la quale, ispirata alla struttura del Decamerone, fu una fonte del teatro di Shakespeare (Otello, Misura per Misura, La notte dell'Epifania, Cimbelino). In Vinegia, appresso Enea de Alaris, 1574, (In fine: In Vinegia, presso Enea de Alaris, 1574), voll. 2 legati in 1, in-4, bella legatura neoclassica inglese di fine Settecento - inizio Ottocento in pieno vitello color tabacco, dorso a 5 nervi con titolo in oro, filetti e fregi geometrici (sempre in oro) negli scomparti, piatti decorati a secco: inquadrati da una cornice esterna a palmette e con fregio rettangolare a motivi geometrici neoclassici al centro dello specchio, sguardie in carta marmorizzata, tagli rossi, cc. [8], 251, [1], l'ultima c. bianca - 232, [8]. Con marca tipografica in xilografia sui due frontespizi. Opera che si ispira al Decamerone. Le novelle sono narrate da un gruppo di dame e gentiluomini sfuggito al sacco di Roma del 1527 e imbarcatosi verso Marsiglia. La prima edizione è del 1565. Antica gora all'orlo del margine bianco basso di circa metà del volume, ma esemplare senza dubbio molto bello, in legatura di pregio. Cartellino di biblioteca religiosa inglese sulla controguardia anteriore. Etichetta lascito William O'Brien. La legatura ha purtroppo il piatto anteriore staccato.
