The recipient is likely John Gideon Wilson, noted bookseller of Jones and Evans, which "served as a rendezvous for leading figures in the literary world" (ODNB). This work contains the title novella, The Heir, in which Sackville-West "vented her feelings about Knole", and four other short stories. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, bottom edge untrimmed. Spine faded, lettering toned, brown mark and ink spots at head of spine, slight rubbing to board edges, foxing to book block edges and outer leaves; a very good, smart copy.

First edition, signed limited issue, number 99 of 100 signed copies, this one of 50 copies for private circulation; numbers 1 to 50 were for sale. The copies for private circulation were issued in patterned boards, with a more intimate photographic portrait as the frontispiece (the for-sale copies used a reproduction of Strang's famous portrait). Two variants of the patterned boards are noted in Cross & Ravenscroft-Hulme, with no priority. This copy has the diagonal rows of flowers with brown petals on a yellow background, as opposed to the straight rows of daisy-type flowers in blue and orange on a cream background. Cross & Ravenscroft-Hulme A.7b. Tall octavo. Original white cloth-backed floral patterned paper boards, spine label lettered in black, edges untrimmed. Photographic portrait frontispiece by Swaine, with tissue guard. Newspaper clipping of author's obituary loosely inserted. Covers toned, extending a little to contents, spine ends bumped, extremities occasionally worn, offsetting to endpapers, occasional foxing to contents. A very good, clean copy, binding firm and square.

July 1922'.Alfred Milner, the 1st Viscount Milner, was a colonial administrator and statesman, who was an important member of David Lloyd George's War Cabinet. He had a long and important career, key to the formulation of Britain's foreign and domestic policy from the mid 1890s to the early 1920s.'The Heir' follows insurance salesman Mr. Chase as he finds that he has inherited a manor from a relative. Though he finds the house a burden and impractical, he finds himself drawn to the estate, just as he had set the plans in motion to sell the house.Written by the noted Bloomsbury author Vita Sackville-West, well known today for her friendship and relationship with fellow author, Virginia Woolf. Sackville-West provided the inspiration for Woolf's beloved novel 'Orlando'. Sackville-West was also a noted garden designer at her house Sissinghurst, the garden of which is still celebrated today. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Spine and head of the front board are a little faded. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, with a small tear to the head of the spine. A few light marks to the boards and spine, heavier to the head of the front board. Spots to the paste downs and endpapers. Inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages ae bright and clean. Very Good. signed by author. book.

This limited edition only contained the one story. Copies numbered from 51-100 were for private circulation. Numbered and Signed by Vita Sackville-West. This is the unique and rare number 60. Binding: hand-made paper and all edges uncut. Bound in "patterned" covered boards, quarter bound in white imitation vellum, with white paper tile label on the spine, printed black. Mild partial browning to endpapers, very light, occasional spotting but an exceptionally rare copy. The private circulated edition had varied decorative patterns. This particular edition as mentioned in Cross & Ravenscroft-Hulme A7.(b2). "No. 60: Diagonal rows of flowers with brown petals and white centres, on a mustard background, and with white dots scattered throughout". A wonderful addition to any VSW collector's library.
