Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 120 pages. Published in 2004. Retrospective collection of the photographer's unpublished work. Her follow-up to "Crosstown", one of the finest photography books on the art of Helen Levitt. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Helen Levitt and Marvin Hoshino: Regular-sized volume format. Blue cloth boards with white titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Helen Levitt. Foreword by Adam Gopnik. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Steidl in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Helen Levitt's "Here And There". Some of the photographer's finest unpublished work. Most of the photographs were taken in New York City, Levitt's primary subject in the course of a seven-decade photographic journey (she spent some time in Mexico City, and the pictures she took there are collected in a book named after the city). Here are 110 photographs, 90 of them never before published, including portraits of her close friends James Agee and Walker Evans (Levitt patiently accompanied Evans when he took his subway pictures, published as "Many Are Called"). "Here And There" collects Levitt's own favorite images, selected from her immense private collection, revealing her acute sense of how street life has changed cosmetically and how it has remained the same substantially. "The sheer determination of this inimitable photographer to walk the streets of her beloved city for this length of time and take pictures of what she sees reaffirms her unofficial status as New York City's visual poet laureate" (Publisher's blurb). "Helen Levitt is one of the treasures of New York. Her vignettes of domestic, daily city life, taken on the Lower East Side and in Harlem, are a form of poetry that evokes the fortitude and forbearance of New Yorkers past and present" (The New York Times Book Review). "Levitt's photographs have the quality of frozen street-corner conversation: She went out, saw something wonderful, came home to tell you all about it, and then, frustrated, said, 'You had to be there' , and you realize, looking at the picture, that you were" (Adam Gopnik). An absolute "must-have" title for Helen Levitt collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Helen Levitt. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is an art photography classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Signed copies of Helen Levitt's books are scarce, and will increase in value. A rare signed copy thus. 110 tritone plates. Helen Levitt's "A Way of Seeing" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 184 pages. Published in 1997. Retrospective collection of photographs on subject. One of the finest photography books of the 20th century. Limited Slipcased Edition of 200 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the regular trade edition. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Helen Levitt and Marvin Hoshino: Oversize-volume format. Gray cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Helen Levitt. Essay, "Helen's Other City", by James Oles, the American photography scholar/historian who has lived in Mexico City since 1991. Selected Exhibitions, Bibliography, and Acknowledgments appended at the end. Matching gray slipcase with gilt titles on one side. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the travelling exhibition of the same name held in 1997 and 1998. Presents Helen Levitt's "Mexico City". Indelible photographs of the eponymous, tragic city. In 1941, Helen Levitt spent several months in Mexico, photographing the city and its inhabitants. Her work joins the best by such photographers as Tina Modotti, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Walker Evans, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, who all felt an urgent need to come to grips with the city. Without sentimentality, Helen Levitt captured the conflicts and juxtapositions that announced Mexico City's entry into the 20th century. "These images stand as crucial documents of an urban world caught in the throes of modernity, of a people, and of a nation that was leaving the village behind" (James Oles). To show just that, Levitt personally selected the photographs in this collection, from among the hundreds she took, to represent her body of work on her other city, a searing contrast to her beloved New York, of which she has deservedly been called its visual Poet Laureate. An absolute "must-have" title for Helen Levitt collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Slipcased Edition of 200 numbered and signed copies, indicated/numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page. It is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen by Helen Levitt. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. 67 duotone plates. Helen Levitt's "A Way of Seeing" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. His autobiographical novel, A Death in the Family (1957), won the author a posthumous 1958 Pulitzer Prize. Agee is also known as a co-writer of the book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men and as the screenwriter of the film classics The African Queen and The Night of the Hunter. First edition of Levitt's impressive collection of previously unpublished color photographs. Oblong octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Association copy, inscribed by the author to fellow photographer Jeff Wall on the title page, "For Jeff Wall. Helen Levitt." The recipient, Jeff Wall, has been a key figure in Vancouver's art scene since the 1970's. He is best known for his large-scale back-lit Cibachrome photographs that explore Vancouver's mixture of natural beauty, urban decay, and postmodern and industrial featurelessness. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Foreword by John Szarkowski. An exceptional association. In 1959, and again in 1960, Helen Levitt received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation to photograph in color on the streets of New York, where she had photographed two decades earlier in black-and-white. This resulting body of work was shown as a continuous slide projection at New Yorkâs Museum of Modern Art - an early example of a slide show presentation by a museum and one of the first exhibitions of serious color photography anywhere in the world. Slide Show presents more than one hundred photographs, more than half of which have never been exhibited or published before.

First edition of Levitt and Agee's classic collaboration. Oblong quarto, original black cloth, illustrated with 50 black-and-white photogravures.ÂFine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. Signed by Helen Levitt on the title page. Essay by James Agee. "James Agee, dead ten years in 1965, had written his essay for the book in 1946 Although he may not have been the first writer to apply the word lyrical to Levitt's marvelously serendipitous images of urban street theater, his essay was for some time their most persuasive critical frame. In this edition, his text literally brackets the 50 photos, which are arranged in an episodic montagebleak, antic, poignant; sometimes melodramatic, often comicat once suggestively narrative and as ephemeral as a passing glance" (Roth, 178). In this timeless work, "Levitt's photographs are beautifulmajor, underrated works. Like Henri Cartier-Bresson, she achieves a rare balancing act: her pictures have sentiment without being sentimental" (Parr & Badger II:252).
