Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Paperback. Despite the title, this is not just a book of helpful hints; it is a cookbook filled with entertaining recipes from the mid-1900s. Those of a certain age will remember eating dishes such as sardine and egg spread (!), Ritz cracker pie, chicken liver with mushrooms, sweetbread ring, mol…ded cottage cheese, and sweet potatoes with marshmallows. Of course, there is gelatin and canned fruit in here as well! The helpful hints sections include estimated calorie counts for some foods, how to cook bacon, baking hints, uses for stale bread, measures and weights, cooking times, and especially how to chop onions without tears: "Hold a 1/4 slice of bread between your teeth. Keep your mouth slightly open and breathe through your mouth. Try it." (Yes, please try it.) This cookbook was compiled by the Women's Committee for Hampton, who attest to the quality of the recipes. Hampton was part of the Northampton land grant given to Col. Henry Darnall in 1695. His heirs sold the land in 1745 to Col. Charles Ridgely. The property remained in the Ridgely family until 1948, after which it became the Hampton National Historic Site, located just north of Towson, Maryland. Hampton was the first site selected as a National Historical Site for its architectural significance by the U.S. National Park Service. When the Hampton Mansion was completed in 1790, it was the largest private home in the United States. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the United States.
