Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. large 8vo, 734 pgs., illustrated, pages clean.Signed by author on a 3" x 5" index card attached to first endpaper, also a letter from Irving thanking him for his interest in his grandfather. Irving was renowned not only for his commanding performances in Shakespearean roles?Hamlet, Macbeth, Shylock, and Richard III among them?but also for his role as an actor-manager. He ran London's Lyceum Theatre from 1878 to 1902, overseeing every aspect of production, from casting to lighting design. His long and fruitful partnership with actress Ellen Terry helped define the golden age of the Lyceum. He was also a mentor to Bram Stoker, who worked as his business manager for nearly three decades. Some scholars believe Irving may have inspired aspects of Count Dracula's character.Bound in blue cloth, gold lettering, very good and wrapped in dust jacket. Add to basketPaper. Condition: Good. First Edition. An Interesting Collection of Original Sir Henry Irving and Dorothea Baird Ephemera including signed items, postcards, programmes, advertisements and a handwritten Henry Irving letter. The contents are a theatre programme, five advertisement cards, seven Irving postcards, two Baird postcards, two signed Irving postcards, a signed paper by Irving and Baird and a four-sided Lyceum Theatre letter from 1862 in the hand of Henry Irving about a charitable London festival. All from the early 1900's. Sir Henry Irving 1838 - 1905, born John Henry Brodribb, sometimes known as J. H. Irving, was an English stage actor in the Victorian era, known as an actor-manager because he took complete responsibility (supervision of sets, lighting, direction, casting, as well as playing the leading roles) for season after season at the West End's Lyceum Theatre, establishing himself and his company as representative of English classical theatre. In 1895 he became the first actor to be awarded a knighthood, indicating full acceptance into the higher circles of British society. Irving is widely acknowledged to be one of the inspirations for Count Dracula, the title character of the 1897 novel Dracula whose author, Bram Stoker, was business manager of the theatre. Dorothea Baird 1875 - 1933 was an English stage and film actress.Baird was the daughter of Sir John Forster Baird, a prominent English barrister-at-law. She married Henry Brodribb, son of Sir Henry Irving, in 1896, and, together, they had two children, Laurence Forster Irving in 1897 and Elizabeth Irving in 1904. Various sizes. Generally, in average to good condition. Tape marks to some edges. Mounting residue to some rears and general usage marks. Some postcards have been edge reduced. Letter a little marked. Light repairs to some of the paperwork. Ref 19259. Signed by Author(s).

London: William Heinemann, 1906 8vo., 2 vols; bright red publishers cloth, lettered in gilt to upper boards and spine, the former also featuring a portrait of Irving in gilt inside decorative oval border; publishers device blindstamped to lower boards; outer edges untrimmed; pp. [ix], viii-xii, [ii], 372; [v], vi, [iii], 2-388; with two frontis portraits behind mounted tissue guards, and numerous other illustrations throughout; both volumes in far better condition to those often found, some pages entirely unopened, very fresh and clean throughout, the tissue a tad browned and endpapers offset; otherwise lovely examples, the cloth a little rubbed, pushed and sunned along spine [together with] ALS on Lyceum Theatre headed notepaper (25 x 20cm, folded to 12.5 x 20cm); written in Stokers hand and signed by Henry Irving; one small brown mark to upper portion, else fine. This biography was the third work of non-fiction written by Stoker, who was Irvings business manager at the Lyceum theatre in London. The pair enjoyed a working relationship which lasted over 30 years, beginning in 1876 when Stoker had travelled to Dublin to watch a performance of Hamlet, in which Irving was starring. Michael Kilgarriff of the Irving Society wrote of their friendship: Irving provided the star power and the driving force, Bram a bottomless well of loyalty and the administrative capability to keep the show on the road. These volumes were published one year after Irvings death in 1905. The letter is a fascinating one. In it, Irving writes to a Mr Brookes many thanks for the picture of Toole whom I have discovered (in your group) after hard study. The recipient was Warwick Brookes, a pioneering photographer who also took several portraits of Henry Irving himself, some of which were published in magazines such as The Sketch and The Strand. The portrait he is referring to is one of John Lawrence Toole, to whom these volumes are dedicated in Vol I, (p.[vii]) Loving Comrade and True Friend. Toole was an English comic actor and theatrical producer, who was the first actor to have a West End theatre named after him. A fascinating association. Signed by Author(s).

The article was 'extremely interesting', as was 'the Photograph of Irving in his robes', a copy of which, he asks to purchase. Stuart evidently makes a present of the photograph, as the third letter begins: 'This is really noble of you! I have a great veneration for Irving & shall treasure the "pulls" enormously. I was lucky enough to see him in all his principal roles & have never seen another actor who impressed me so.' He reports 'appaling weather here', adding 'otherwise your native county has done us proud'. First edition. A superb association copy of this early illustrated work from English theater designer, Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966). Contains two pieces of correspondence from the Craig family, the book likely being owned by Edward's (EGC from here on) sister, Edith Craig (1869-1947). The first letter is from the publisher, Herbert S. Stone, to EGC and Edith's mother and subject of the book, Ellen Terry (1847-1928). Stone (Ca.1871-1915) was an innovative publisher in New York in the 1890's first with Stone & Kimball, and then under his full name. He launched two successful magazines, including the influentialChap-Book,which ran from 1894-1898. He published the landmark feminist novel,The Awakening,by Kate Chopin. He also was a casualty on the Lusitania, going down with the ship on that fateful day in 1915. The letter is quite interesting in content, discussing the royalty payments to EGC for his book. He mentions hoping the book could be sold in theatres, but "Mr. Bram Stoker got ahead of us with a book of his own so that we have to rely entirely on the book shops." Stoker at the time was Henry Irving's manager and director of the Lyceum Theatre, soDraculawould have taken preference. He also notes "We are planning to make a better edition on better paper and more attractively bound as soon as we can dispose of the copies we have on hand." The second piece of correspondence has a note at the top from EGC's son, Edward saying "This must be to Edy Craig - it was in her copy of the book 'in question.'" This hastily written letter from EGC to his sister is in regards to an unfavorable review of the book. Our best transcription: "Lend on your copy of the IH ET book to me will you - I want to take Master Rhodes to task. It's absolutely damnable. what I consider the best thing to counteract it. I've made another set of new drawings for another artsy American firm. Do you think Miss Marshal [sic] would do me a real good turn & write me 1/2 dozen pages large type about both IH & ET & Lyceum - to go in with the drawings? I want it by next Thursday at latest - I can lend her (?'s) 2 books - it would help - Don't you mention it to her if you think she's too busy or would not like to do it. Edward. Do you know Lady Corbet?" Quite interesting is the mention of Christabel Marshall (1871-1960), an English Suffragette and author, who lived with her fellow suffragette, Edith starting in 1899. Christabel was also a secretary to Ellen Terry. Edith, Christabel, and artist, Clare Atwood lived together in a polyamorous relationship from 1916 until Edith's death in 1947. This book and accompanying letters provide a fascinating look into the lives of the influential Craig family and their connections in the literary, theatre, and publishing worlds, and broader social movements at the turn of the century. Thin 4to, unpaginated. 19 mounted plates, some color tinted, and illustrated title. Tan paper boards with red lettering and green Gordon Craig monogram on front, publisher's insignia on rear. Spine mostly worn away with webbing exposed. Internally clean and complete. Laid in is a 21-line typed letter, signed and with hand corrections by the publisher, Herbert Stuart Stone, to Miss Eleen Terry, dated March 23, 1900 on Herbert S. Stone letterhead. Foxing, staining, and transmittal folds, with a small edge tear along one horizontal fold. Autograph letter signed "Edward" to his sister Edith, two 8x6.5" sheets of ruled paper, written in pencil on three sides. Toning, edge chipping, and transmittal folds.

Condition: Good. First edition. Two volumes in original dark red cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt. Irving side portrait in gilt to the front panels. Both volumes show fraying at the external hinges. The internal hinges remain strong. This is a completely unique edition in that it is a presentation copy absolutely crammed with tipped in items. Volume one has a tipped in signed photograph of Irving. Beneath the photograph is the following statement - "This card and the one in volume 2 were signed by him in his dressing room for the Fresh Air Fund the night he died. P.K." The card in volume 2 is missing. It looks to have been excised. Also contained within are tipped in letters. All of these letters are hand written, dated, and signed by themselves. The letters are from comic writer and playwright, Charles Francis Burnand; English comic actor, theatrical manager, and theatrical producer, J. L. Toole; the beautiful, and without doubt, one of the greatest of all English actresses, Ellen Terry; English actor and playwright, Wilson Barrett; very famous actor in her own right, and later teaming up with legendary Charles Kean, Mrs. Charles (Ellen) Kean; and finally, actor and actor manager, Sir Squire Bancroft. Besides the letters listed above, there are approximately 13 tipped in documents - articles from "The Westminster Budget," and newspaper clippings. The letters are bright, complete and easy to read. Good.
